Radio for Thanksgiving Weekend

We kick off this show talking about the Michigan deer season so far and take a look ahead to the muzzleloader season with my friend Tom Lounsbury.

Next, Tim Hart of the Q1 Buckpole contest joins me to talk about the latest entries in that state wide contest.

The second hour features Michigan’s most famous walleye angler, Mark Martin. Mark talks about fall fishing and the upcoming ice fishing season. He also tells me about the little known technique of hunting whitetails in sand dunes.

The hour wraps up with Tony Hansen of the Michigan United Conversation Clubs. Tony talks about reaction to the proposal that would eliminate Michigan’s minimum hunting age. We also discuss the role of MUCC today.

My first guest in the final hour talks about fall musky fishing in Michigan. His name is Don Barnard and he’s a veteran of the sport. We discuss why fall is a good time for trophy fish and some of the most productive techniques to target them.

Next, Bryan Darland of Jay’s Sporting Goods joins me to talk about hand held GPS units. Bryan has some good tips on choosing the perfect Christmas gift.

As always the show wraps up with Chef Dixie Dave Minar who has another tasty wild game recipe.

Another busy show, I hope you enjoy it.

Outdoor Magazine Radio (11/13/10)

This weekend on Outdoor Magazine we celebrate deer hunting in Michigan and with the firearm season set to kick off Monday morning, there’s lots to talk about.

First, Lt. Ron Utt of the Michigan DNR joins me to talk about common violations his officers see this time of year. Trespassing and baiting complaints are near the top of that list.

The hour wraps up with Tom Campbell of Woods-n-Waternews. Tom and I talk about the history and tradition of deer hunting in our state.

In the second hour whitetail expert Richard P. Smith is my first guest. Richard talks about the potential for trophy bucks in Michigan. He also describes the differences between southern Michigan deer hunting and chasing big bucks in the northern cedar swamps.

Tony Hansen of the Michigan United Conservation Clubs wraps up the hour talking about the importance of deer hunting to Michigan residents.

RJ Meyer of the Trophy Room Taxidermy Studio kicks off the third hour of the show. RJ tells me an animal doesn’t have to make the record book to be a trophy. He also has some advice on how to get your animal ready for the taxidermist.

Chef Dixie Dave Minar follows up on that conversation with great advice of field care of your animal to get the best tasting venison. He also has a very nice recipe for us.

It’s a celebration of the history and tradition of deer hunting in Michigan this week on Outdoor Magazine Radio.

Outdoor Magazine Radio (11/6-7)

You would expect a busy show this time of year, and that’s we have on this weekend’s rundown.

First, Kyle Bonner joins me to talk about the 200 inch buck he shot in Lapeer County, Michigan. This is a great story because Kyle knew the giant was in the area, but never thought he’d get a shot at him.

Then, Judy Black of Lachine tells me about her love for bowhunting and how she shot an impressive fifty five inch moose with her bow in Ontario last month. This lady has quite a trophy room, especially since she just started bowhunting a few years ago.

My next guest is Tom Schneider of Heater Body Suits . With cold weather on the way Tom says hunters can stay warm using his suits in the worst conditions Mother Nature can throw at you. I’m taking mine to Kansas this week and will let you know how I like it.

The second hour kicks off with a good friend of mine, Derrick Poet of Jay’s Sporting Goods. Derrick discusses the fall hunting season so far and talks about the gear hunters are asking for. Archery and gun seasons are included in the conversation.

Then Tony Hansen of Michigan United Conservation Clubs joins me to talk about the departure of Michigan DNRE director Becky Humphries. We also discuss a proposal to drop Michigan’s minimum hunting age.

For the final hour we head west to Kansas and talk with Ed Barton of B and C Kansas Hunts. Ed tells me about his operation and Kansas whitetail hunting in general. I have high hopes for my Kansas hunt coming up in just a few days.

As always, Chef Dixie Dave Minar helps us wrap up the show. This week Dave has another tasty venison recipe.

I told you it was a busy show. I hope you enjoy it.
