Outdoor Magazine Radio (7-30/31)

An interesting show this week on Outdoor Magazine.

First I talk about various outdoors events and issues in Michigan, including a movement to lift the baiting ban in northeast Michigan’s “TB zone”. For what it’s worth, I think the people in that part of the state are being short changed and I’d like to see the ban lifted there.

Then, Bill Pyles of Ohio Bowhunting Outfitters joins me to talk about the specifics of his operation and bowhunting in Ohio. Again this year, Bill is offering a discounted price for listeners of the Outdoor Magazine show.

The hour wraps up with Tom Cambell of Woods-n-Waternews. This time Tom talks about the evolution of that publication and how they plan to use technology to stay relevant in the future.

Hour number two features a topic we’ve never covered before in 17 years of the Outdoor Magazine radio show. Patrick Bevier joins me to talk about the sport of spearfishing in Michigan. Patrick is looking to generate interest in the activity that is usually thought of as a salt water sport. You can contact him for more information at his website Outdoor

Then Dan Eichinger of the Michigan DNR talks with me about the new Hunter Heritage Law. This is the legislation that eliminates Michigan’s minimum hunting age. Although I commented incorrectly in the first hour, that law does not go into effect until the fall of 2012.

Our final hour features Jeff Best of Best Outdoor Products. Jeff’s Michigan based company offers implements to put in food plots, but his topic of discussion is hunting whitetails in other states. Jeff says hunting outside Michigan can increase your odds of shooting a nice buck and he has some great suggestions on how to get started.

As always, Chef Dixie Dave Minar wraps the show up. This time he has a couple of very quick, and very tasty, crayfish recipes.

Another busy show. I hope you like it.

Radio for weekend of 7/23-24/11

We celebrate mid summer in the Great Lakes state this weekend with a look around…and ahead at what’s coming up.

First, RJ Meyer of the Trophy Room Taxidermy Studio joins me to talk about the care and handling of trophy salmon and trout. Lots of big water anglers will be landing big fish in the next few weeks and they’ll be looking for a good taxidermist. I highly recommend RJ and the Trophy Room. In fact, RJ does all of my work and much of it is on display in my office.

Some Examples of RJ's Work

RJ and I also talk about out the upcoming bear season and the recent designation of the Trophy Room as an official DNR bear check station.

Ted Harpham of Darton Archery wraps up the hour. This time Ted unveils the name of their hot new flagship crossbow for 2012.

Former Outdoor Magazine pro staffer and good friend Tim Roller kicks off hour number two. Tim is the owner of Ultimate Outfitters guide service and the producer of Tim Roller’s Wild Addiction TV show seen each week on Sportsman Channel.

We reminisce about the world record brown trout caught by one of Tim’s clients, Tom Healy in the fall of 2009 and the implications of catching such a trophy.

World Record Brown Trout

Tim and I also talk about fall fishing for king salmon in the rivers and he has some early season whitetail scouting advice.

The final hour features another favorite guest, Richard P. Smith. Richard tells me about Michigan’s first moose hunt. The event is scheduled for this fall, but it’s not a harvest, it’s a photo and video contest designed to bring attention to the state’s growing moose herd.

Richard also talks about the upcoming bear hunt and has some great advice for first time bear hunters.

Another busy and informative show, I hope you enjoy it.

Why I Do The Radio Show

The Outdoor Magazine Radio show has been on the air in one form or another now for about seventeen years.

During that time the program has evolved from a one hour show on one local station, to a three hour program on nineteen stations across Michigan. We also produce a podcast version of the program that can be heard online worldwide.

Recently, we developed two Apps to make it even easier for online listeners to connect to the show. Those are available for Apple products in the iTunes store and Android fans can get it in the Market.

On a recent show I talked about why I produce the program and my plans for the future.

Listen to those comments here

Until recently, my radio show has been a secondary part of my business. Now, with the television show coming to an end, I can devote all my time to Outdoor Magazine Radio and work to make it the best show possible.

I hope you get a chance to check it out.

Radio for this Weekend (7/16-17/11)

Another busy show this weekend on Outdoor Magazine radio.

First, Lance Valentine of Walleye 101 joins me to talk about mid summer fishing. Lance is an expert at using electronics to target big water walleye and he has some great advice.

Then Tom Campbell of Woods-n-Waternews wraps up the hour with an update on the big Outdoor Weekend coming up in just a few weeks.

The second hour features veteran river guide and fishing captain Paul Schlafley of Riverside Charters in Manistee. Paul talks about fishing for offshore steelhead on Lake Michigan. He says the action several miles from port has been very good, and should continue for a couple more weeks.

Then, Tony Hansen of MUCC joins me to talk about the role of the Michigan United Conservation Clubs and why membership in that group can benefit hunting and fishing in Michigan.

In the final hour we talk about traditional archery with David Balowski of St. Joe River Bows. David has some great information on shooting recurves and longbows.

The show wraps up, as always, with Chef Dixie Dave Minar. This time Dave has a very nice salmon recipe.

Another good show. I hope you enjoy it.

Outdoor Magazine Radio (7/9-10/11)

Dave Mull of Great Lakes Angler Magazine is the first guest on this weekend’s show. Dave is the editor of that publication, and an avid angler as well. We talk about fishing the great lakes in general and get some hot spots and tips from Dave.

The second hour features Pete Jones of Superior Bear Outfitters. Pete is the guy I shot my wolf with last winter. I have an excerpt of that hunt on the Outdoor Magazine You Tube Channel.

Pete and I discuss that trip, as well as his bear hunting operation. That season starts mid August but Pete still has a couple of spots open.

Then, Tony Hansen of the Michigan United Conservation Clubs joins me. Tony has details on the Hunter Heritage bill on the Michigan Governor’s desk. That legislation would eliminate the minimum hunting age.

Outdoor writer and fishing guide Dave Rose kicks off the final hour of this weekend’s show. Dave’s Wild Fishing Guide service offers “on the water seminars” to his clients across northern Michigan. This time Dave talks about fishing the “dog days” of summer.

Wild game chef Dixie Dave Minar wraps up the show. This time he has a tasty walleye recipe.

A busy mid-summer edition of Outdoor Magazine Radio. I hope you enjoy it.

Radio for 4th of July Weekend

I start out talking about this past week fishing on Saginaw Bay with my Mom and Dad. The fishing was terrible, but the experience was wonderful. I also encourage listeners to use the outdoors as a venue to solidify relationships with friends and family.

Next, Ted Harpham of Darton Archery introduces a contest to name the new Darton crossbow. The winner will receive a nice gift package from Darton.

You can suggest a name on the Darton Archery Facebook page.

Then, Tom Weston joins me to talk about a new app available on the Michigan DNR website. This is a great resource to find campgrounds and boat launches across the Great Lakes State.

The second hour features outdoor writer and expert outdoorsman Tom Lounsbury. This time Tom talks about a variety of topics including his love of fishing small streams for mid summer smallmouth.

In the third hour we visit with Rick Mowery of the Bohning Archery company. Bohning has been in the archery business for sixty years, starting out with a single adhesive. These days the Michigan based company has many products for modern day archers and hunters.

The show wraps up with Chef Dixie Dave Minar. This time Dave has a tasty venison recipe perfect for the grill on this long holiday weekend.

Have a great Independence Day weekend, and I hope you enjoy the show.
