Outdoor Magazine Radio Rundown (10/29/11)

It’s a cliche’ by now…but there’s another busy show coming up this week on Outdoor Magazine.

First, Tom Schneider of the Heater Body Suit company joins me to talk about staying warm in the coldest weather. I’ve used an HBS while wolf hunting in temperatures as low as minus forty degrees, and I can tell you first hand the product works great.

Then a conversation with Dick Peshinksi of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Dick is a member of an advisory committee that believes there should be a sand hill crane season in Michigan. He says their numbers are too high and the big birds are causing lots of damage to farmers crops.

We wrap up the hour by checking in with our friends at Woods-n-Waternews. This time Tom Campbell draws the short straw and talks about his hunting season so far, as well as some of the articles in their November edition.

The second hour features Chris Keefer of the Back Country Quest TV show. Chris, along with his brother Casey, just returned from a month long self guided adventure into the Alaskan wilderness. That trip will be featured on the Sportsman Channel early next year.

I also talked with Chris about the Rack 1 Whitetail System. Rack 1 is a great product for attracting deer during the hunting season, and growing a healthier deer herd year round.

Then Tony Hansen of the Michigan United Conservation Clubs joins me. Tony and I talk about the latest in Michigan’s feral swine saga and Michigan’s outdoor landscape in general.

Derrick Poet of Jay’s Sporting Goods helps kick off the final hour of this week’s show. Derrick has some great advice on choosing the right gear to get ready for firearm deer season coming up in just a couple of weeks.

As always, we wrap up with wild game chef extraordinaire Dixie Dave Minar. This time Dave has a very tasty venison recipe.

Like I said, another busy show. I hope you can join me.

Radio Rundown (10/22-23)

Lots of whitetail talk, and some trophy fall musky action this week on Outdoor Magazine radio.

First, Michigan outdoor writer Jerry Lambert Joins me. Jerry has a new book out called Trophy Whitetails and it’s filled with stories about big bucks.

Next, Tim Hart of Q1 Buckpole checks in. This week Tim has some big bucks from the youth season to talk about.

The whitetail theme continues in hour two with one of the country’s most respected experts, John Ozoga. John is a retired research biologist from Michigan’s DNR and he has some interesting thoughts on whitetail behavior and management.

Don Barnard helps us change the conversation over to fall fishing in the final hour. Don is an avid Michigan musky angler and says big muskies are putting the feed bag on now. He has some great advice on how anglers can take advantage of that to put a trophy fish in the boat.

As always, Dixie Dave Minar wraps it up…this time with another tasty venison recipe.

This week’s show is packed with great information and insight. I hope you enjoy it.

Radio for October 15/16

Another busy show this week on Outdoor Magazine Radio.

My first guest is a good friend of mine with a thirst for adventure and trophy archery hunts. Gus Congemi of New York started as a pro staffer for the Outdoor Magazine TV show, but now he’s branched off with his own show called Live the Wild Life. Gus just got back from shooting what looks to be the biggest Alaskan brown bear ever taken with a bow.

You can hear an excerpt from that conversation here.

Next, 16 year old Dylan Ricky of Michigan talks about taking a nineteen point trophy buck during Michigan’s youth season.

Here’s video of that.

Tom Campbell of Woods-n-Waternews wraps up the hour with a preview of their November edition.

In the second hour Richard P. Smith takes center stage. Richard is a noted outdoor writer, photography and videography with bear and whitetails as his primary area of expertise…so that’s what we talk about.

The final hour features another friend, Glen Duncan of Duncan’s Outdoor Shop in Bay City. Glen talks about buying used guns, maintaining the guns you already own and he has some great tips for sighting in your deer gun.

As always we wrap up with wild game chef Dixie Dave Minar. This week Dave and I shoot the breeze hunting and the fall in Michigan.

Outdoor Magazine Radio Continues To Grow

We’ve added another station to the Outdoor Magazine Radio family.

WKYO AM 1360 in Caro, Michigan will air the show starting the week of October 10th.

Here’s what the updated coverage map looks like.

The folks at KYO are going to do something a little different though. They’re going to break the show into three individual hours and run them during the week. The program will air Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 10AM.

This brings the number of AM and FM stations in Michigan to twenty, but there’s still room for more growth.

Folks who can’t hear the broadcast version of the show can listen to the podcast online.

Outdoor Mag Radio Rundown (10/10/11)

A fast paced show this weekend on Outdoor Magazine.

First, I tell the story of my recent whitetail hunt in Ohio with Bill Pyles of Ohio Bowhunting Outfitters. The weather, and the bucks, didn’t cooperate this time, but I will head back in a few weeks as we get closer to the rut.

Then, an inspirational story from a young man in Kansas…Ty Hockett. Ty was paralyzed in a car accident but he still pursues his cravings for the outdoors. You can learn more about his story and quest to encourage others to stay involved on his facebook page. You can also hear my conversation with Ty posted on the Outdoor Magazine facebook page.

Rob Milano of Enzo Creek joins me next. Rob is the guy behind the Outdoor Magazine Android and Apple Radio app. Now Rob has come up with a new app to help hunters identify the age of deer, that’s a key tool in quality deer management. You can learn more about the Deer Age Tool on their website. By the way, that group has another app in the works and they’re looking for waterfowl pictures to help illustrate the program. You can submit your photos here, and maybe even make a few bucks.

The hour wraps up with Tim Hart of Q1 Buckpole. With the Michigan deer season in full swing now Tim is starting to get some whitetails entered in the contest. We’ll check in with Tim throughout the season and let you know about the big bucks sure to be entered.

Trophy fall walleye are the theme next as Lance Valentine from Walleye 101 kicks off the second hour. Lance has some great advice for targeting double digit fish…especially on Lake Erie.

Tony Hansen of the Michigan United Conservation Clubs finishes out the hour. Tony talks about hunter numbers and feral swine in Michigan.

In the final hour I take a look at a topic not often covered on Outdoor Magazine, or anywhere else for that matter…raccoon hunting. Jim Wale of JW Kennels joins me with some great insight into that night time form of hunting. We also discuss dog hunting for rabbits, bear and coyote.

As always Chef Dixie Dave Minar runs the anchor leg of the show. This week Dave has a very nice venison recipe.

Another busy show. I hope you can join me.
