Rundown for First Weekend of Fall

We kick off the fall season with lots of talk about deer and deer hunting….with an emphasis on the EHD outbreak in Michigan.

Then Craig Owczarzak of Meats and Mooore has some great advice on what to do with the wild game in you freezer from last season.

In the second hour we concentrate on EHD, the disease that’s killing deer in SW Michigan by the thousands. Here’s a recent map of infected areas, but the numbers are certainly higher now.

First, I talk with avid deer hunter Josh VanHoose. Josh found 39 dead deer on one pound last week and is coordinating the effort to document as many EHD killed deer as possible.

Next, Brent Rudolph of the Michigan DNR. Brent is the guy in charge of monitoring and managing the Michigan deer herd. He has some thoughts on the EHD outbreak and answers many questions about the impact.

In our final hour we switch gears just a little bit and talk with Bill Hahn of Jay’s Sporting Goods
. Bill has great advice on what to look for in a trail camera.

As always the show wraps up with wild game chef Dixie Dave Minar. This week Dave has one of my favorite venison recipes.

Put a Memory on Your Wall

Ever walked into a buddy’s house and marveled at the beautiful whitetail mount on the wall? Well here’s your chance to win a shoulder mount, from the best taxidermist I know.

RJ Meyer at The Trophy Room Taxidermy Studio inside Jay’s Sporting Goods has teamed up with me to give away a custom shoulder mount like this one.

RJ is a master taxidermist who has done all my work for the past several years, and I couldn’t be happier with his work.

To enter the contest, go to the Trophy Room’s new facebook page, “Like” the page and post the comment “I like the Trophy Room”. That’s all there is to it. If you do those two simple steps you’ll be entered to win the mount.

Here’s what makes this contest really special. You don’t have to have the mount done this season. If you don’t shoot an animal you want on your wall, you can wait until you do. RJ will even let you transfer the mount to another hunter if you want.

To double your chances of winning, you can also enter on the Outdoor Magazine facebook page. “Like” my page and comment “I like the Trophy Room” and you’re entered again.

The contest runs through October 1st and you can only enter on each facebook page once per account. There’s nothing stopping you from entering on your wife’s or kid’s accounts though.

Enter now before you forget…and good luck.
