Show Rundown for Last Weekend in March

We kick off the show this week with the new owner of Michigan based ScentLok…Pat Hylant.   Pat says recent test have proven Scent Lok to be much more effective in controlling human odor than other hunting clothes….and they’ve started a marketing campaign to drive that pThen Tom Campbell of Woods-n-Waternews joins me to talk about the most recent edition of that magazine.

In the second hour I talk with Tim Dusterwinkle of the Michigan Bear Hunters Association (  That group recently donated $100,000 to the campaign to fight anti hunters in Michigan.

DNR Fisheries Biologist Mark Tonello wraps up the hour talking about upcoming efforts to strip eggs from West Michigan walleye and steelhead.  You can learn more on their website (

Guns are the topic of discussion in hour number three as I talk with Glenn Duncans of Duncans Outdoor Shop.  We talk about maintenance tips and today’s most popular types of firearms.

We wrap it all up with Chef Dixie Dave Minar who has another great sounding wild game recipe.

Outdoor Magazine Radio Rundown for 3/22

This week’s show kicks off with wildlife biologist Brent Rudolph of the Michigan dnr.  Brent talks about what’s next now that the antler point restriction initiative failed to pass and also looks at the health of the UP deer herd.

Then Karl Ieuter of the Ieuter Insurance Group has the truth about your vehicle coverage when you travel on the ice.

Hour two features Lance Valentine of Walleye101.  Lance talks about the upcoming Detroit River fishery and his thoughts on keeping big and the affect on the resource.

Erin McDonough of the Michigan United Conservation Clubs (mucc) is up next.  Erin helps clear up some of the confusion about wolf hunt proposals scheduled to be on the ballot.

Steelhead fishing Guide Paul Schlafley of Riverside Charters kicks off hour number three.  Paul has a steelhead fishing report from the Manistee River.  In fact, one of Paul’s clients caught this fish while recording the interview.



We wrap up this week’s show with wild game chef Dixie Dave Minar wraps it all up with a tasty venison goulash recipe.

Radio Rundown for the Ides of March

There’s an interesting mix of guests and topics this week on the Outdoor Magazine.

First, television producer and veteran whitetail hunter Tim Roller joins me to announce the  University of Whitetail.  Tim has teamed up with another well known deer hunting expert John Eberhart on a series of intensive, video based seminars to help hunters be more successful.

Then, Tom Campbell of Woods-n-Waternews talks about the April edition of their widely read outdoor magazine.

Hour number two features expert angler Mark Romanack of the Fishing 411 TV show.  Mark talks about late season ice fishing and looks forward to the open water fishing season.

Kevin Swanson of the Michigan dnr is up next.  Kevin is  wildlife biologist in the Upper Peninsula.  He talks about plans to improve whitetail habitat there and has an update on how the deer are doing during this rough winter season.

The final hour of this week’s show kicks off with veteran surf angler Bill Olar.  I know we’re a few weeks away from fishing open water, but I just can’t talk about ice fishing anymore.  Bill has some great advice on how to fish big water without a boat.

We wrap it all up with Chef Dixie Dave Minar.  This week he has another very nice fish recipe.

Show Rundown for 3/8

Some great guests and lots of good information this week on the Outdoor Magazine Radio Show.

First, “Michigan’s Weatherman” Mark Torregrossa joins me to talk about when spring will finally get here.  Mark says the central part of Michigan will have snow on the ground for two to three more weeks (later in the U.P. of course).  He also says the weather is about a month behind this year and the good news is all the snow will help out Great Lakes water levels.  You can follow Mark at or

Hour number two features Jeania Canel of Jays Sporting Goods.  Jeania talks about shotguns for turkey season and has great advice about ammo, sights and accessories for this spring.

Up next, Erin McDonough of the Michigan United Conservation Clubs (mucc).  Erin says the petition to fight the anti hunting movement is rolling along and she encourages hunters and anglers to support Citizens for Professional Wildlife Management (

Veteran outdoor writer Tom Lounsbury kicks off the final hour of this week’s show.  Tom and I talk about this past winter and how it’s affected wildlife.  As usual, we also “shoot the breeze” about several other outdoor related topics and issues.

This week’s show wraps up with Chef Dixie Dave Minar.  This time the Chef has a very nice walleye recipe.
