Show Rundown for 1/31-2/1

We wrap up January and kick off the new month with more good guests this week.

First, Brad Dupuie of Apex Marine joins me to talk about their new Angler Qwest big water trolling tritoons.  That boat was a big success with anglers last summer and the company has made some interesting changes for 2015.

Then, Tom Campbell of Woods-n-Waternews talks about the latest edition of that magazine and what’s coming up next month.

Hour two features Paul Cianciolo of Predator Hunter Outdoors.  Paul has some innovative, high intensity LED lights for predator hunting after dark.

Then Katie McGlashen of the Michigan dnr joins me to talks about the Waterloo Recreation area and the Eddy Discovery Center (

Ice fishing on Lake St. Clair is the subject in our final hour as I talk with veteran outdoorsman Jim Felgenauer.  Jim describes spearing for perch and the action on LSC in general.

We wrap it all up with Chef Dixie Dave Minar.  Dave doesn’t have a recipe this week, instead we talk about the preparation involved in cooking a wild game dinner for several hundred people.

Radio Rundown for 1/24

We kick off this week’s show talking with Dale Hendershot of the Michigan Trappers and Predator Caller’s Association (  I think trappers are the most knowledgeable group of outdoorsmen today, but their way of life has been under some criticism from the antis.  Dale talks about the logistics of trapping, preparation of hides and the price of fur this winter.

Hour number two kicks off with Doug Deming of the Fish Point Lodge on Saginaw Bay.  Doug talks about ice fishing for walleye on the east side of the Bay.

Then Jeff Godi of The Michigan Experience  charters has advice on fishing the west side of the Bay.  Jeff is based out of the Linwood Beach Marina.

Mike Horswill of Jays  Sporting Goods wraps up the hour talking about the hottest ice fishing gear this season.

The ice fishing theme continues into hour number three as I talk with veteran outdoor writer and avid ice angler Steve Griffin.  Steve has great advice for targeting crappies and bluegills on inland lakes.

We wrap it all up with Chef Dixie Dave Minar.  This week Dave has a very nice rabbit recipe.

Rundown for the 10th Anniversary show on MRN

We celebrate the 10th anniversary of Outdoor Magazine on the Michigan Radio Network this weekend (the show has been around a lot longer than that on a different network and the local level).

First, Richard P Smith joins me to talk about a proposed further reduction in the number of Michigan bear tags.

Then, Tom Campbell of Woods-n-Waternews has a preview of their February edition.

Hour two features veteran beagler Tom Summers (  Tom has great advice on running rabbits and choosing the right puppy.

Al Stewart of the Michigan dnr wraps up the hour with a reminder about the deadline to apply for a Michigan springtime turkey license.

We switch gears and talk ice fishing in hour three.  Mark Romanack of Fishing411.  Mark tells of an upcoming adventure for brook trout in the frozen lakes of Ontario and has advice for Saginaw River walleye anglers.

The show wraps up with wild game chef Dixie Dave Minar.  This week there’s no recipe though as we talk about upcoming wild game dinners.  Here’s the flyer for the St. Martin dinner coming up next weekend.

Show Rundown for 1/10/15

We’ve got a busy show this week on Outdoor Magazine Radio.

First, Michigan hunter Jeff Hammond describes an Alabama boar hunt with a twist….they kill the animals using a knife.  Jeff say the hunt is very exciting and surprisingly humane.

Then, Dr. Annie Rummel of Michigan’s Great Lakes Bay Region ( joins me to talk about the appeal of that part of Michigan for outdoor enthusiasts and their families.

Next, Bryan Lowe of the Michigan Buck Pole ( talks about their plans to engage with Michigan hunters and anglers now that deer season is over.

Hour two features long range shooting expert Paul Phillips.  Paul is a former Marine who now shoots for the US Team.  He has great advice to improve your accuracy downrange.

Jorden Susewitz wraps up the hour talking about the Extreme Predator Challenge, a statewide predator calling contest that kicks off later this month.

Archery is the topic in hour number three as I talk with Dave Thomas of BowhunterPlanet.    Dave has some interesting thoughts on the state of archery today and talks about new gear unveiled at the big Archery Trade Association show in Indianapolis.

We wrap it all up with Chef Dixie Dave Minar.  There’s no recipe this week, instead Dave talks about the annual St. Martin Church wild game dinner fundraiser for the Helping Hands Program.
