Rundown for the Last Weekend in January

We wrap up the month with a variety of topics this week on the Outdoor Magazine Radio Show.

First, the “Sturgeon General”, Brenda Archambo of Sturgeon for Tomorrow talks about the upcoming Sturgeon spearing season and successful efforts to protect those prehistoric fish during their spawning season.

Then Gary Morgan of East Lake Outfitters talks about the upcoming Michigan turkey season and looks ahead to the fall bear hunt.

Hour two kicks off with Capt. Doug Deming of the Fish Point Lodge.  Doug says the ice fishing season on Saginaw Bay has been slow because of poor ice conditions.

Then Katie Keen of the Michigan dnr joins me to talk about their programs to introduce school kids to wildlife and the outdoors.

Outdoor Writer Richard P Smith is featured in the final hour of this week’s show.  Richard talks about the number of Michigan bear tags, the mild winter and UP wildlife and what he perceives to be unfair crossbow regulations for Upper Peninsula hunters.

We wrap it all up with Chef Dixie Dave Minar.  This time Dave has a very nice rabbit recipe.

Rundown for the Weekend of 1/23-24

Some unusual topics this week on the Outdoor Magazine Radio Show.

First, I talk with Mike Azzopardi of the Michigan Hawking Club about falconry and hunting with birds of prey.

Then Tom Campbell from Woods-n-Waternews  has details on their latest edition.

Hour two kicks off with Jim Felgenauer talking about perch spearing on Lake St. Clair.

Then Drew YoungeDyke from mucc has details on the 40th anniversary of the Michigan Trust Fund.

Karl Ieuter of the Ieuter Group wraps up the hour talking about insurance issues while taking a vehicle or atv on the ice.

Wild boar hunting in Michigan is the opening subject in the final hour of this weeks show as I talk with veteran hunter Nick Ostroski.  Nick and his crew have probably taken more wild hogs in Michigan than anybody else.

We wrap it all up with Chef Dixie Dave Minar.  This time Dave has a nice rabbit recipe.

Radio Rundown for January 16/17

My first guest this week is Lydia Lohrer, the outdoor writer for the Detroit Free Press (freep.com).  Lydia has some interesting thoughts on the Ann Arbor deer cull and the threat of aquaculture in Michigan.

Then Jorden Susewitz joins me with an update on the Extreme Predator Hunt coming up later this month.

Hour two kicks off with a discussion about shed hunting as I talk with Mark Miller of the North American Shed Hunters Club (shedantlers.org).

Craig Kasmer of the Michigan dnr is up next.  Craig has some interesting info about  Hartwick Pines near Grayling.

Then Peter Pelon of the Michigan Youth Conservation Council (michiganycc.wordpress.com) talks about that group’s efforts to get young people involved in the outdoors.

Dean Botek of the Michigan Darkhouse Angling Association (Mi-Darkhouse.org) joins me in hour number three to talk about the wintertime activity of pike spearing.

The show wraps up, as always, with wild game chef Dixie Dave Minar.  This week Dave and I talk about some upcoming wild game dinners and the logistics of cooking for several hundred people.

Radio Rundown for 1/9

The first guest on this week’s Outdoor Magazine radio show is Tim Checkeroski of Michigan based G5 Outdoors.  Tim talks about their new products unveiled at the recent ATA  (Archery Trade Association) show.

Then Bryan Lowe of the Michigan Buck Pole (MiBuckPole.com) checks in with an update on their plans to expand their brand.

Hour two kicks off with Al Stewart of the Michigan dnr.  Al reminds us that January is the time to apply for springtime limited quota Michigan turkey licenses.

Drew YoungeDyke from the Michigan United Conservation Clubs (mucc.org) is up next.  Drew discusses recent legislation brought about from suggestions by MUCC members.

Predator hunting is the topic of discussion in hour number three of this week’s show as I talk with Blaine Bailer of Jays Sporting Goods.  Blaine is a veteran coyote hunter and he has some great suggestions on getting started.

We wrap it all up once again with Wild Game Chef Dixie Dave Minar.  This time Dave and I talk about the finer points of cooking wild game.

Radio Rundown for New Years Weekend

We kick off the new year with some great guests and information this week on the Outdoor Magazine Radio Show.

First, Ben Nielsen of Showspan joins me to talk about the big Ultimate Fishing Show coming up next weekend in Novi.

Then Tom Campbell of Woods-n-Waternews talks about the Michigan deer season and the big buck photos submitted to their magazine this year.

Hour two features Al Herman of the Michigan Friends of NRA (friendsofnra.org).  Al says the recent political pressure against guns makes it more important than ever to get new people involved in shooting.  His group has a series of fundraising dinners across the state with that goal in mind.

The topic of Michigan’s elk herd wraps up the hour as I talk with Michigan dnr Biologist Brian Mastenbrook.  Brian talks about the upcoming aerial survey of the herd and plans for a new research study of the animals.

Fishing is the topic in the final hour of this week’s show as I talk with Michigan’s “Mr. Walleye”,Mark Martin .  Mark has some great fishing tips, but he also talks about the  business of fishing and what it takes to be successful.

We wrap it all up with Chef Dixie Dave Minar and another great wild game recipe.
