Radio Rundown for the End of February

We wrap up the month with a wide range of topics this week on the Outdoor Magazine radio show.

First, Steve Sharp of the National Wild Turkey Federation (nwtf.org) talks about the R3 Program.  That’s an initiative to get more hunters through a project to recruit, retain and reactivate.

Hour two kicks off with Eric Lafollette of Jays Sporting Goods.  Eric talks about training his dogs to look for shed whitetail antlers and how he uses wireless trail cameras to scout remote hunting areas.

Brian Mastenbrook of the Michigan dnr is up next with details on a new research project involving Michigan elk.

Michigan’s “Mr. Walleye” Mark Martin kicks off the final hour of this week’s show.  Mark reminisces about the early days of fishing on Muskegon Lake and has great advice for anglers heading out this weekend.

We wrap it all up with Chef Dixie Dave Minar.  This week the Chef has a walleye recipe to remind us of warm weather.

Rundown for February 20/21

We kick off this week’s Outdoor Magazine show talking about suppressors.   They’re now legal for hunting in Michigan and lots of folks have questions about them.  We get the answers from Mike Visser of Silver Bullet Firearms in Grand Rapids.

Then Tom Campbell of Michigan’s #1 Outdoor Publication, Woods-n-Waternews joins me to talk about their latest edition.

Hour two kicks off with Dale Hendershot of the Michigan Trappers and Predator Callers Association.  (mtpca.com).  Dale talks about fur prices this winter and the importance of trapping to maintain healthy wildlife populations.

Next, Drew YoungeDyke of mucc joins me to talk about their latest “On the Ground” project at the Gratiot Saginaw Game Area.

Chad Merrihew of  Security Credit Union (SecurityCU.org) wraps up the hour with news of a new “Outdoor Adventure” credit card designed to finance hunting and fishing adventures.

Tim Roller of Whitetail Journey is featured in the final hour of this week’s show.  Tim talks about the world of outdoor television today and has great advice on springtime steelhead fishing.

We wrap it all up with Wild Game Chef Dixie Dave Minar.  This time Dave has a very nice walleye recipe.

My first guest this week is Dr. Dean Beyer of the Michigan dnr.  Dean talks about the multi year study of predation on UP whitetail.  He says wolves are not as big of a factor as some hunters think.  You can learn more about the project on their website….http://fwrc.msstate.edu/carnivore/predatorprey/.

Hour two kicks off with fishing guide and inventor Travis White.  Travis combined his passion for fishing with his degree in engineering to create the Pro Nav Marine unit.  That high tech piece of equipment uses your cell phone to steer an electric motor.

Then, fisheries biologist Marty Holmgren of the DNR talks about the new fishing exhibit at the Grand Rapids Public Museum (grpm.org).  That exhibit on the bank of the Grand River features the river’s sturgeon population.

Fishing educator and outdoor writer Dave Rose of Wild Fishing is featured in the final hour of this week’s show.  Dave talks about fishing opportunities this time of year in the north country.  He also describes what it takes to break into the world of outdoor writing.

We wrap it all up with Chef Dixie Dave Minar.  This time the Chef has a very nice lake trout recipe.

Show Rundown For February 6/7

We kick off the new month with a little slower paced show this week.

First, professional angler and fishing educator Lance Valentine from Walleye 101 joins me.  Lance talks about his new TeachingFishin website and his recently announced partnership with Angler Qwest boats.

Hour two kicks off with Conservation Officer  Sgt.Tony Soave.  Tony talks about how the job of game warden has changed over the years and describes the training his Michigan dnr officers get.

Drew YoungeDyke of the Michigan United Conservation Clubs (mucc.org) is up next.  We talk about several topics this week  including aquaculture, the use of chocolate to bait bears and the MUCC Youth Camp Programs.

Outdoor industry veteran Greg Abbas of A-Way Outdoors (AWayHunting.com) kicks off hour number three.  Greg has great advice on getting ready for the spring turkey season.  He also describes how his outdoor invention consulting business works.

We wrap it all up once again with Wild Game Chef Dixie Dave Minar.  This week Dave has a hearty rabbit recipe.
