Show Rundown for the end of January

We wrap up the month talking about a wide variety of topics this week.

First, Michigan dnr fisheries biologist Jim Baker talks about the Saginaw Bay walleye fishery and the role ciscos/herring could play in the future.

Then “Sturgeon General” Brenda Archambo of Sturgeon for Tomorrow joins me with details on the upcoming Sturgeon Shivaree on Black Lake.

Hour two kicks off with outdoor writer Richard P Smith.  Richard says bear predation on UP whitetails is a bigger problem than most people realize.  He also talks about the effective of mandatory antler point restrictions.

Adam Bump from the DNR  is up next.  Adam reminds us that squirrel and rabbit seasons are still open.  He says with poor ice conditions across the southern part of the state, small game hunting is a good option.

Professional angler and fishing educator Lance Valentine of Walleye 101 is featured in hour three.  Lance talks about chasing trophy wintertime walleye on Lake Erie and looks ahead to the springtime fishery on the Detroit River.

Wild game chef Dixie Dave Minar wraps it all up with another great recipe.

Rundown for the Weekend of January 21st

We kick off the show talking about the Ann Arbor deer situation with Chad Stewart of the Michigan dnr.  Chad was involved in the decision to allow sterilization of deer there as an alternative to hunting.

Then Chad Merrihew from Security Credit Union ( joins me to talk about his initiation into the sport of predator hunting.  Let’s just say Chad is now hooked on coyote hunting.

Hour two kicks off with an interesting conversation with Capt. Glen Buehner of the Great Lakes Salmon Initiative (  Glen says it’s the DNR’s goal to completely stop stocking chinook salmon in Lake Michigan.

Drew YoungeDyke of mucc  is up next.  Drew has some additional thoughts on the whitetail situation in Ann Arbor.  He also outlines federal legislation that could take wolves off the endangered species list.

We’re talking ice fishing in the final hour of this week’s show.  Joe Cook from Jays Sporting Goods has great advice on using tip ups for pike.

Chef Dixie Dave Minar wraps it all up, this time with an unusual bobcat recipe.

Outdoor Magazine Radio Rundown for January 14/15

Jeff Poet of Jays Sporting Goods and the Michigan Wildlife Council ( is my first guest.  Jeff talks about the “Here, for Generations” campaign to educated Michigan’s non hunters and anglers about the benefits of hunting and fishing.

Tom Campbell from Woods-n-Waternews is up next.  Tom talks about the upcoming sport show season and their appearance at the Ultimate Fishing show in Novi this weekend.

Hour two features Drew YoungeDyke of mucc.  Drew describes the recent plan approved by the Michigan dnr to sterilize deer in Ann Arbor as a means of controlling the population.

Ed Shaw from the DNR is my next guest.  Ed talks about their outdoor skills academy.

Michigan’s “Mr. Walleye”, Mark Martin ( kicks off the final hour of this week’s show.  Mark talks to us from the frozen water of Houghton Lake during one of his “Fishing Vacation Schools”.  Mark says bite there is pretty good.  In fact, you can hear one of his clients catch this nice walleye during our conversation.


We wrap it all up with Chef Dixie Dave Minar.  This time Dave has an unusual recipe….coyote.

Show Rundown for Weekend of January 7

We kick off this weekend’s show talking with Al Stewart of the Michigan dnr.  Al talks about springtime turkey hunting in and reminds us now is the time to apply for a permit.

Then Ben Nielsen of Showspan joins me to talk about the Ultimate Fishing Show coming up next weekend in Novi.

Shed hunting is the opening conversation in hour two of this week’s show as I talk with Mark Miller of the North American Shed Hunter’s Club (  Mark says the bucks are dropping early this year and he has good advice on where to find them.

Drew YoungeDyke of mucc is up next.  Drew describes how the latest battle with anti hunting group HSUS and describes how the legislature got involved.

Hour three features veteran outdoorsman Jim Felgenauer.    Jim and I had planned to talk about perch spearing on Lake St. Clair, but there’s no good ice yet.  Instead, we shoot the breeze about a variety of outdoor related topics.

We wrap it up with Chef Dixie Dave Minar.  This time Dave has a very nice elk recipe.
