Radio Rundown for 10/14

First, Gary Morgan of East Lake Outfitters (WildGameDynasty.com) joins me to talk about  his bear season in the eastern UP.  We also talks about deer hunting in the Yoop and look ahead to next spring’s turkey season.

Then Tom Campbell from Woods-n-Waternews  joins me to talk about their November edition.

In hour two, audiologist and avid hunter Mike Stewart is my first guest.  Mike describes the damage gunshots can do to our hearing and has some great advice on how to prevent it.

Then, Captain Jeff Godi of The Michigan Experience talks about waterfowl hunting on Saginaw Bay and how the high water could affect hunters this season.

Outdoor writer and wildlife expert Richard P Smith is featured in the final hour of this week’s show.  Richard tells the story of his successful Michigan bear hunt and talks about bear and deer hunting in Michigan.

Radio Rundown for the Weekend of 9/23

First, wildlife biologist Chad Stewart of the Michigan dnr joins me with a preview of what to expect from the upcoming deer season.  He also talks about the biological and social impact of the youth hunt and has an update on CWD and TB in the Michigan deer herd.

Hour two kicks off with Conservation Officer Lt. Jeremy Payne.  Jeremy says they’re looking for more officers and describes what it takes to be a modern day Game Warden.  He also has some advice on staying legal in the field this fall.

Paul Yauk is up next.  Paul has details on the Michigan trail system and the upcoming national trails week program.  You can learn more about the trail system at Michigan.gov/trailsweek.

We wrap up the hour talking about pheasant hunting in Michigan.  Ken Dalton is on a crusade to get the DNR to release pheasants on state land and the movement is getting some support.  You can follow the project at mphi.info.

Matt Pedigo is the featured guest in hour number three this week.  First, Matt talks about the Michigan Wildlife Council and their “Here for Generations” campaign (HereforMiOutdoors.org).  Then, Matt puts on his Michigan bear hunters hat to discuss the state’s bear population and the number of tags issued by the DNR.

Then, whitetail expert John Eberhart (deer-john.net) talks about scouting hunting properties and his new consulting business to help Michigan hunters.

Next, Katie Keen from the Michigan dnr reminds us small game season opens September 15th and has details of their GEMS program for grouse hunters.

Hour three features outdoor writer and wildlife expert Richard P Smith.  Richard talks about bear and deer hunting, as well as his new book on tracking wounded whitetails.

First “Rocktober” Radio Rundown

Radio Rundown for September 12/13

This week’s Outdoor Magazine show is filled with great guests and information.

First, outdoor writer and fishing guide Dave Rose (WildFishing.com)  joins me to talk about fall fishing opportunities in northern Michigan.

Tim Dusterwinkle is featured in hour number two.  Tim is the president of the Michigan Bear Hunters Association (mibearhunters.org) He talks about the upcoming bear season and the appeal of running bears with dogs.

Next, the conversation turns to whitetail deer with Chad Stewart of the  Michigan  dnr Chad has an update on the CWD situation and preview of the upcoming season.

Bird hunting is the opening topic of hour number three as I talk with Al Stewart.  Al is the upland game bird specialist for the DNR and an avid bird hunter.  Al talks about fall turkey hunting, as well as grouse and woodcock seasons.

Dixie Dave Minar wraps up this week’s show with a spicy grilled goose breast recipe.

Show Rundown for Mother’s Day Weekend

My first guest for this edition of the Outdoor Magazine show is Brad Dupuie of apex marine.  Brad and I discuss their new Angler Qwest boat and the challenges involved in convincing anglers a pontoon can be an effective big water trolling rig.

Then Tom Campbell of Woods-n-Waternews joins me with the story of his successful turkey hunt.

Hour two features Steve Winters of the Michigan Bowfishing Association (BowfishBAM).  Steve talks about the appeal of that rapidly growing sport and the gear needed to get involved.

Show Rundown For 10/26

We wrap up the month of October this week on Outdoor Magazine Radio.

First, Glenn Duncan of Duncans Outdoor Shop in Bay City joins me to talk about sighting in your deer gun.  He also comments on the resurgence in the popularity of revolvers.

Then Tom Campbell of Woods-n-Waternews describes his hunting experiences so far this fall and has a quick rundown of what’s in this month’s edition of the magazine.

The second hour features Lt. Dave Shaw of the Michigan dnr.  Dave is a veteran game warden and has great advice on how to stay safe, and legal, in the woods this fall.

Noted outdoor writer and Michigan hunting expert Richard P Smith kicks off the final hour of this week’s show.  Richard describes his recent Upper Peninsula bear hunt and defends bear hunting with dogs.  He also talks about his plans to target a big Michigan whitetail.

Show Rundown for August 24th.

RJ Meyer of the Trophy Room Taxidermy Studio joins me this week to talk about preserving your hunting and fishing memories.  RJ has some great advice on field prep for the taxidermist and what you can expect from those mounts.  For a look at some of RJ’s work, check out his website….TrophyRoomMichigan.com.

Then Fred Post of the Sanford American Legion Post talks about a fundraising event we’re having in a couple of weeks to raise money for veterans.  It’s Saturday, September 14th.  This poster has details.

Hour two kicks off with old friend Jim Barta of the Hunter Safety System.  Hunter Safety System revolutionized the concept of treestand safety and Jim has good advice on staying safe in a treestand.

MUCC‘s Tony Hansen is up next.  This week Tony and I talk about screw ups in the outdoors and how they make for some great stories.

Another old friend joins me in the third hour as I talk with expert outdoorsman and veteran writer Tom Lounsbury.  Tom and I discuss a wide range of topics from pheasant hunting to handguns.

The show wraps up once again with chef Dixie Dave Minar.  This time Dave doesn’t have a recipe, instead we talk about bear hunting and fundraising dinners.

Radio for weekend of 7/23-24/11

We celebrate mid summer in the Great Lakes state this weekend with a look around…and ahead at what’s coming up.

First, RJ Meyer of the Trophy Room Taxidermy Studio joins me to talk about the care and handling of trophy salmon and trout. Lots of big water anglers will be landing big fish in the next few weeks and they’ll be looking for a good taxidermist. I highly recommend RJ and the Trophy Room. In fact, RJ does all of my work and much of it is on display in my office.

RJ and I also talk about out the upcoming bear season and the recent designation of the Trophy Room as an official DNR bear check station.

Ted Harpham of Darton Archery wraps up the hour. This time Ted unveils the name of their hot new flagship crossbow for 2012.

Former Outdoor Magazine pro staffer and good friend Tim Roller kicks off hour number two. Tim is the owner of Ultimate Outfitters guide service and the producer of Tim Roller’s Wild Addiction TV show seen each week on Sportsman Channel.

We reminisce about the world record brown trout caught by one of Tim’s clients, Tom Healy in the fall of 2009 and the implications of catching such a trophy.

Tim and I also talk about fall fishing for king salmon in the rivers and he has some early season whitetail scouting advice.

The final hour features another favorite guest, Richard P. Smith. Richard tells me about Michigan’s first moose hunt. The event is scheduled for this fall, but it’s not a harvest, it’s a photo and video contest designed to bring attention to the state’s growing moose herd.

Richard also talks about the upcoming bear hunt and has some great advice for first time bear hunters.
