Radio Show for the First Weekend of Summer

We kickoff the show talking about a couple of great fishing outings I had this past week.  One, with the “Church Ladies” of Trinity Monitor….

Then, Ron St. Louis of Northern Wilderness Bear Outfitters joins me to talk about bear hunting in White River Ontario.

The hour wraps up with Tom Campbell of Woods-n-Waternews  and a big award he received from the Michigan Outdoor Writer’s Association.

Hour two starts out with Gary Morgan of East Lake Outfitters (WildGameDynasty.com).  Gary describes his Michigan outfitting business for turkeys, bear and deer.  He also talks about his first upcoming season in Missouri for whitetails.

Next, Jim Hammill of the Michigan Wildlife Council (HereforMiOutdoors.com) talks about the progress of the “Here, for Generations” campaign.

Jared Groth of Vanguard Outdoors is up next with details of their new RaiseYourGlassPodcast, including a video version of that program.

Michigan’s “Mr. Walleye”,  Mark Martin is featured in hour three.  Mark talks about the finer points of trolling for walleye, including the use of a stern planer to catch bonus fish.

Wild game chef Dixie Dave Minar wraps it all up.  This time he has another great fish recipe.

Rundown for Memorial Weekend

Veteran Lake Superior charter captain Dave Kimar of Kimars Charters on Shelter Bay joins me first on this week’s show.  Dave talks about running fifty miles off shore to fish for giant lake trout on Stannard Rock.

Extreme long range shooter Paul Phillips kicks off hour two.  Paul is with the US Rifle Team and recently has been working to extend his shooting ability.  Paul and his fellow shooters are shooting accurately at nearly two miles and are looking to extend their range even farther.

Then, Dan Eichinger of mucc  joins me to talk about challenges facing his organization and the hunters and anglers in Michigan today.

Outdoor writer and fishing guide Dave Rose of WildFishing.com is featured in the final hour.  Dave talks about fishing opportunities in Northern Michigan.

We wrap it up with chef Dixie Dave Minar.  This week Dave has a very nice walleye recipe.

Outdoor Magazine Radio for this Weekend

Charter Captain Mike Orr of Five Orrs Charters kicks off the show this week.  Mike was fishing southern Lake Michigan for salmon and trout but he’s moved his business to Lake Erie because the fishing there is so much better.H

Hour two features another professional fisherman, Paul Schlafley of River Side Charters out of Manistee.  Paul is talking to us from the Manistee River, where he says the steelhead action has been pretty good.

Next, mucc Executive Director Dan Eichinger joins me to talk about a variety of issues, including the plan to allow commercial fishermen to keep walleye and lake trout.  MUCC is against that proposal.

James Severance of Burt Watson  Chevrolet wraps up the hour.  James says they’re offering a new “Outdoorsman” Silverado, based on my truck.

Radio Rundown for March 4/5

We kick off the new months with some great guests and interesting topics.

First, Eric Sherwood of Whitetail Select food plot seed joins me.  Eric is an agronomist and hunter who brings an interesting perspective to the food plot business.  He has great advice on starting a plot, where to put it, how big to make it and what seed to use.

Hour two kicks off with outdoor writer and fishing guide Dave Rose of  Wildfishing.com. Dave talks about late winter and early spring fishing opportunities in Northern Michigan.

Then, Drew YoungeDyke of mucc talks about their concern over possible changes in the Michigan commercial fishing laws that would allow those fishermen to keep walleye, salmon and trout.  CWD and asian carp are also topics of discussion.

We wrap up the hour with Kurt Ieuter of the Ieuter Insurance Group.  Kurt says it’s important to work with the right insurance company to protect our outdoor gear and equipment.

Guns and shooting are the topic in hour three of this week’s show as I talk with Glenn Duncan of Duncans Outdoor Shop in Bay City.  Glenn talks about the demand for guns today, how to maintain them and what to look for when buying a new gun.

We wrap it up with Chef Dixie Dave Minar.  This week Dave and I talk about the recent wild game dinner and auction by my church, Trinity Monitor, and what it takes to cook for hundreds of people at an event like that.

Radio Rundown for the Weekend of Feb 18/19

Michigan bears are the opening topic of discussion this week on Outdoor Magazine Radio. Michigan dnr wildlife biologist Kevin Swanson says the population is up slightly in the UP and dramatically in the northern Lower Peninsula.  As a result, hunters are likely to see more bear permits issued.

Meteorologist Mark Torregrossa wraps up the hour talking about the mild weather this winter.  He says that trend is likely to continue for a while.

Dale Hendershot of the Michigan Trappers and Predator Callers Association (mtpca.com) is up next.  Fur prices are up slightly but Dale says most trappers don’t do it for the money.

Next, I talk with Drew YoungeDyke from mucc.  Drew talks about the upcoming edition of their Michigan Out of Doors Magazine and we discuss the new Michigan Out of Doors Podcast.

Randy Stec from the Michigan Wildlife Council (HereforMIOutdoors) is the final guest of the hour.  Randy updates us on the status of that campaign to educate Michigan’s non hunters and anglers.

Springtime steelheading is the opening topic of discussion of the final hour of this week’s show as I talk with Tim Roller of Whitetail Journey TV.  Tim was a fishing guide on West Michigan rivers for many years and he describes how to use water temp, flow and color to catch fish.

Wild game chef Dixie Dave Minar wraps it all up.  This time it’s possum.

Rundown for the Weekend of 2/11-12

My first guest the week is Michigan dnr Fisheries Chief Jim Dexter.  Jim talks about the Lake Michigan salmon fishery and responds to charges he should be fired for decisions on stocking lake trout.

Then Tom Campbell from Woods-n-Waternews  joins me with details on their March edition.

Hour two kicks of with Blaine Bailer of Jays Sporting Goods.  Blaine is an avid predator hunter and has advice on coyote hunting during the breeding season.

Elyse Walters from the DNR is up next.  She talks about the upcoming free fishing weekend and their weekly fishing reports for anglers.

Dan Davis of Burt Watson Chevrolet wraps up the hour.  Dan has worked at that dealership for more than thirty years and says leasing is the way to go these days.

We’re talking Angler Qwest in the final hour of this week’s show.  Boat designer Brad Dupuie joins me to discuss changes in the boat design for 2017.  He also shares some tips on trolling spoons for open water walleye.

Wild game chef Dixie Dave Minar wraps it all up.  This time Dave has an interesting beaver recipe.

Outdoor Magazine Radio Rundown for January 14/15

Jeff Poet of Jays Sporting Goods and the Michigan Wildlife Council (HereForMiOutdoors.org) is my first guest.  Jeff talks about the “Here, for Generations” campaign to educated Michigan’s non hunters and anglers about the benefits of hunting and fishing.

Tom Campbell from Woods-n-Waternews is up next.  Tom talks about the upcoming sport show season and their appearance at the Ultimate Fishing show in Novi this weekend.

Hour two features Drew YoungeDyke of mucc.  Drew describes the recent plan approved by the Michigan dnr to sterilize deer in Ann Arbor as a means of controlling the population.

Ed Shaw from the DNR is my next guest.  Ed talks about their outdoor skills academy.

Michigan’s “Mr. Walleye”, Mark Martin (MarkMartins.net) kicks off the final hour of this week’s show.  Mark talks to us from the frozen water of Houghton Lake during one of his “Fishing Vacation Schools”.  Mark says bite there is pretty good.  In fact, you can hear one of his clients catch this nice walleye during our conversation.

Radio Rundown for New Year’s Weekend

We’re talking about a wide range of topics this week on Outdoor Magazine Radio.

First, bear hunter Vance Gawel describes a trip to the UP when wolves killed and ate one of his dogs, then turned their attention to him.

Hour two kicks off with Jason Blitchok of the Michigan Darkouse Anglers Association (Mi-Darkhouse.org).  Jason says the new South East Michigan chapter of that group wants to promote the thrill of pike spearing in the southern part of the state.

Jake Putala is up next.  Jake is a high school student recently named to the DNR’s Youth Conservation Council.  He has some interesting ideas on what’s needed to keep young people involved in the outdoors.

Paul Cianciolo of Predator Hunter Outdoors is featured in hour three of the show.  Paul talks about hunting predators after dark with centerfire rifles and how his company’s line up of high power lights can help hunters be more successful.

We wrap it up with Chef Dixie Dave Minar.  This time Dave doesn’t have a recipe though, the Chef talk about his recent elk hunting adventure in Michigan’s Pigeon River Forest Area.

Outdoor Magazine Rundown for December 17th and 18th

We kick off this week’s show talking about the new product line from Michigan made Darton Archery.  Sales Manager Ted Harpham describes the new bows and crossbow for 2017.

Then Tom Campbell of Woods-n-Waternews has details on their January edition.

Hour two kicks off with Captain Doug Deming of the Fish Point Lodge on Saginaw Bay. Doug says they had a good waterfowl season and he’s looking forward to good ice so he can take clients out to chase walleye this winter.

Katie Keen of the Michigan dnr is up next.  Katie says now is the time to enter to win the Pure Michigan Hunt for next year.

We talk fishing in hour three of this week’s show as Mark Romanack of Fishing 411 joins me.  Mark has news about changes in the Off Shore Tackle OR 12 planer boards and their tattle flags.  He says those improvements could help you catch more fish.

Radio Rundown for this Weekend

We kick off the month of December this week on Outdoor Magazine Radio.

First, I talk with Drew YoungeDyke of mucc about the recent decision by the Michigan Court of Appeals that could jeopardize scientific management of our fish and game species.  Drew says the issue is now in the hands of our state Attorney General.

Then, Scott Szafranski of the Linwood Beach Marina joins me with a Saginaw Bay perch and walleye report.

The hour wraps up with Tom Campbell of Woods-n-Waternews.  Tom talks about his deer season and the latest edition of their magazine.

Steelhead fishing is the opening topic in hour number two as I talk with Lance Keene of Steelhead Hunter Charters.  Lance says river conditions are perfect now  and the action is hot.
