Radio Rundown for the First Weekend in November

We kick off the new month with a wide range of topics this week.

First. Tom Beecher of Vanguard Outdoors (VanguardWorld.us) has details of a big discount program with Jays Sporting Goods.  You can get twenty percent off all Vanguard products at either Jay’s store if you use my name. “Avery”, at checkout.

Then Suzanne Miller-Allen from Blue Cross Blue Shield (bcbsm.com) talks about their “Novembeard” program.  Hunters can get a free health screening at Jay’s stores on November 8th from 9-2.  DNR personnel will also be there to answer questions.

Trophy musky fishing is the topic in the second hour as I talk with retired DNR fisheries tech and avid angler Don Barnard.  Don says this is the best time of year to target big muskies and he has great advice on finding those fish.

Michigan dnr veterinarian Dr. Kelly Straka is up next.  Kelly has the latest on CWD in Michigan.

In hour three we talk about preserving your outdoor memories with master taxidermist RJ Meyer of The Trophy Room Taxidermy Studio in Allendale.  RJ says a deer doesn’t have to be a record book animal to be worthy of putting on the wall.

Wild game chef Dixie Dave Minar wraps it all up.  First, he has advice on proper field preparation, then Dave has a very nice barbecue venison rib recipe.

I hope you like the show.

Rundown for First Weekend in October

We kick of the month of “Rocktober” with a little slower paced show this week.

First, Master Taxidermist RJ Meyer of the Trophy Room Taxidermy Studio (TrophyRoomMichigan.com) joins me to talk about choosing the right taxidermist for your trophy. By the way, RJ has opened a new studio in West Michigan (Allendale, near Grand Valley State University).

Then Tom Campbell of Woods-n-Waternews has a look at the latest edition of their monthly magazine.

Hour two features Greg Abbas of A-Way Hunting.  Greg is an expert whitetail hunter who loves to share his knowledge about targeting trophy bucks.  Greg has great advice on calling deer, as well as using scent to attract them.  We also talk about his invention consulting business.

Fall muskie fishing is the topic in the final hour of this week’s show as I talk with veteran angler and Michigan dnr fisheries technician Don Barnard.   Don says fall is the best time to target the trophy fish because they’re feeding heavily in preparation for winter.

We wrap it all up once again with Chef Dixie Dave Minar.  This time Dave has another very nice venison recipe.

A little slower pace this week but lots of great information on this week’s show.  I hope you like it.

Radio for Thanksgiving Weekend

We kick off this show talking about the Michigan deer season so far and take a look ahead to the muzzleloader season with my friend Tom Lounsbury.

Next, Tim Hart of the Q1 Buckpole contest joins me to talk about the latest entries in that state wide contest.

The second hour features Michigan’s most famous walleye angler, Mark Martin. Mark talks about fall fishing and the upcoming ice fishing season. He also tells me about the little known technique of hunting whitetails in sand dunes.

The hour wraps up with Tony Hansen of the Michigan United Conversation Clubs. Tony talks about reaction to the proposal that would eliminate Michigan’s minimum hunting age. We also discuss the role of MUCC today.

My first guest in the final hour talks about fall musky fishing in Michigan. His name is Don Barnard and he’s a veteran of the sport. We discuss why fall is a good time for trophy fish and some of the most productive techniques to target them.

Next, Bryan Darland of Jay’s Sporting Goods joins me to talk about hand held GPS units. Bryan has some good tips on choosing the perfect Christmas gift.

As always the show wraps up with Chef Dixie Dave Minar who has another tasty wild game recipe.

Another busy show, I hope you enjoy it.
