Rundown For The Weekend of 10/21

First, Chad Stewart of the Michigan dnr has an update on CWD in Michigan, including the latest case in Montcalm County.

Then Jim Hammill from the Michigan Wildlife Council (HereforMiOutdoors.org) joins me to talk about that group and their “Here For Generations”  campaign.

Hour two features professional angler Lance Valentine of  Walleye 101.  Lance is getting ready to head down to Lake Erie to chase big walleye.   He has advice on trolling big water in the late season.

DNR biologist and avid upland bird hunter Al Stewart is up next.  Al has details of an upcoming woodcock symposium.

Pheasant hunting is the topic in the final hour of this week’s show as I talk with Tom Lounsbury.  Tom hasn’t missed an opening day of the Michigan pheasant season in six decades.  He says the birds have changed over the years and has advice on how to hunt them today.

We wrap it all up with wild game chef Dixie Dave Minar.  As always, Dave has a recipe that sounds great.

Radio Rundown for the Weekend of 9/23

First, wildlife biologist Chad Stewart of the Michigan dnr joins me with a preview of what to expect from the upcoming deer season.  He also talks about the biological and social impact of the youth hunt and has an update on CWD and TB in the Michigan deer herd.

Hour two kicks off with Conservation Officer Lt. Jeremy Payne.  Jeremy says they’re looking for more officers and describes what it takes to be a modern day Game Warden.  He also has some advice on staying legal in the field this fall.

Paul Yauk is up next.  Paul has details on the Michigan trail system and the upcoming national trails week program.  You can learn more about the trail system at Michigan.gov/trailsweek.

We wrap up the hour talking about pheasant hunting in Michigan.  Ken Dalton is on a crusade to get the DNR to release pheasants on state land and the movement is getting some support.  You can follow the project at mphi.info.

Matt Pedigo is the featured guest in hour number three this week.  First, Matt talks about the Michigan Wildlife Council and their “Here for Generations” campaign (HereforMiOutdoors.org).  Then, Matt puts on his Michigan bear hunters hat to discuss the state’s bear population and the number of tags issued by the DNR.

Chef Dixie Dave Minar wraps it all up.  This time Dave has a very nice squirrel recipe.

Outdoor Magazine Radio Rundown for this Weekend

I start out by telling my story of a close encounter with a brown colored black bear while hunting in Ontario with Ron St. Louis of Northern Wilderness Bear Outfitters.

Jeff Poet of Jays Sporting Goods kicks off the second hour of this week’s show.  Jeff describes  the world of outdoor retailing today.  He then switches hats to talk about the Michigan Wildlife Council and their “Here for Generations” campaign (HereforMiOutdoors.org).

Professor Patty Janes from Grand Valley State University is up next.  She describes their “Michigan Cares for Tourism” program and how folks can get involved.

Hunting dogs are the topic of hour three this week.  Mike Thorman of the Michigan Hunting Dog Federation (facebook.com/theMHDF).  He talks about the negative attitudes toward hunters who run coyotes and bears with dogs

We wrap it all up with Chef Dixie Dave Minar.  This week, the chef has a very nice fish recipe.

Radio Show for the First Weekend of Summer

We kickoff the show talking about a couple of great fishing outings I had this past week.  One, with the “Church Ladies” of Trinity Monitor….

Then, Ron St. Louis of Northern Wilderness Bear Outfitters joins me to talk about bear hunting in White River Ontario.

The hour wraps up with Tom Campbell of Woods-n-Waternews  and a big award he received from the Michigan Outdoor Writer’s Association.

Hour two starts out with Gary Morgan of East Lake Outfitters (WildGameDynasty.com).  Gary describes his Michigan outfitting business for turkeys, bear and deer.  He also talks about his first upcoming season in Missouri for whitetails.

Next, Jim Hammill of the Michigan Wildlife Council (HereforMiOutdoors.com) talks about the progress of the “Here, for Generations” campaign.

Jared Groth of Vanguard Outdoors is up next with details of their new RaiseYourGlassPodcast, including a video version of that program.

Michigan’s “Mr. Walleye”,  Mark Martin is featured in hour three.  Mark talks about the finer points of trolling for walleye, including the use of a stern planer to catch bonus fish.

Radio Rundown for this Weekend

First, Tom Simmon of Jays Sporting Goods has great advice on buying a gun safe.  By the way, Tom safes those safes are a great place to store all you family valuables, not just firearms.

Then Chelsea Maupin of Gud Marketing talks about the research they did on the perception of hunters and anglers in Michigan.  The results are surprising.

Hour two features Michigan’s “Whitetail Whisperer”, John Eberhart (DeerJohn.net).  Eberhart explains why most hunters aren’t as successful as they could be.  He also announces a new program to bring his expertise to your hunting property.

Katie Keen of the Michigan dnr is up next.  She reminds us that May is the month to apply for bear and elk permits.

Fishing is the topic in hour three as I talk with Lance Valentine of Walleye 101.  Lance has great advice on trolling for open water walleye and getting the most from your fishing electronics.

Rundown for April 16/17

Great guests and information this week on the Outdoor Magazine Radio Show.

First Matt Pedigo, chairman of the Michigan Wildlife Council joins me.  Matt talks about the new “Here. For Generations” campaign (hereformi.org).  That campaign to educate Michigan’s non hunters and anglers officially kicked off this week.   Matt also puts on his bear hunter hat and we discuss the growth of bear hunting in Michigan.

Hour two kicks off with expert turkey hunter and Michigan dnr biologist Al Stewart.  Al talks about turkey hunting in Michigan and has some great tips to make your hunt more successful.

Drew YoungeDyke of the Michigan United Conservation Clubs (mucc.org) is up next.  Drew outlines some of the resolutions proposed by their club members.

Springtime fishing is the topic of hour number three as professional angler and fishing educator Lance Valentine of Walleye 101 joins the show.  Lance has great advice on jigging the Detroit River for walleye and early season trolling on Saginaw Bay.

Show Rundown for Easter Weekend

This week’s show kicks off with Carol Rose of the Michigan Wildlife Council.   Carol talks about the “Here.  For Generations” campaign to educate Michigan’s non hunters and anglers.

Then Tom Campbell of Woods-n-Waternews joins me.  Tom talks about the early days of that magazine and why they’ve been so successful for more than thirty years.

Morel mushrooms are the opening topic of discussion in hour number two.  Clayton Edney, a guy I call “Michigan’s Morel Master”,  discusses the early start to this year’s mushroom season and has great advice on finding the tasty fungus.  You can track the season on Clayton’s Facebook page (www.facebook.com/michiganmorels).

Pure Michigan Hunt winner Mike Scherzer is up next.  Mike talks about the gear he won and plans for his upcoming hunts.
