Outdoor writer and wildlife expert Richard P Smith joins me in hour three as we talk about bear hunting in Michigan and the status of the state’s deer management program.

Independence Day Show Rundown

First, Lisa Jackson of the Michigan dnr  joins me to talk about the elk and bear drawing process.  Far more people apply than are successful and that leads to some questions about the system.

Then Meteorologist Mark Torregrossa (farmerweather.com and Mlive) talks about why the summer has been windy and cooler than normal so far.  He also says that weather pattern should shift in the next couple of weeks.

Hour two features outdoor writer and wildlife expert Richard P Smith.  Richard talks about bear hunting in Michigan and how to use trail cameras to scout for the upcoming deer season.

The topic of Michigan snakes wraps up the hour as I talk with Hannah Schauer of the Michigan DNR.  Hanna is producing a series of videos to highlight each of our 18 species.

Lake Michigan charter captain Paul Schlafley of River Side Charters  in Manistee is my guest in the final hour of this week’s Outdoor Magazine show.  Paul talks about how the weather has affected fishing so far this season and has great advice for catching early morning king salmon and lots of lake trout.

It’s a little slower pace this week, but still lots of great information.  I hope you like the show.

Outdoor Magazine Rundown for March 1st.

We kick off the month of March with a fast paced Outdoor Magazine radio show.

First, I talk with Blaine Bailer of  Jays Sporting Goods.  Blaine is a veteran coyote hunter and has great advice on late season predator hunting.

Then Tom Campbell of Woods-n-Waternews  joins me.  Tom says they’re scrambling  this year to add some late season ice fishing stories to their April Edition (available in mid March).  Tom says usually they’ve moved on to open water fishing topics by that time of year.

Hour number two features Dale McNamee of the Upper Peninsula Sportsmens Alliance.  Dale says his group is the voice of UP hunters and anglers and we discuss some of the items the group is concerned about.

Then, Katie Keen of the Michigan dnr joins me to talk about the new hunting and fishing license package.  Those new licenses will be required by April 1st.

In the third hour we head outside the great state of Michigan as I talk with charter captain Mike Orr of Five Orrs Charters.  Mike fishes southern Lake Michigan for early season trout and salmon.  Usually his trolling boat is in the water by now but Mike says it’ll be several weeks this year before the ice moves out.

Then we head to northern Quebec as I talk with Pierre Smarlack of Northern Outfitters.  Pierre runs a first rate hunting and fishing operation near the town of Val-d’or and he has info on his hunting and fishing packages.

We wrap up this week’s show, once again, with chef Dixie Dave Minar.  This week Dave has a tasty walleye recipe.

It’s another fast paces show filled with great guests and information.  I hope you like it.
