Rundown for Memorial Weekend

Veteran Lake Superior charter captain Dave Kimar of Kimars Charters on Shelter Bay joins me first on this week’s show.  Dave talks about running fifty miles off shore to fish for giant lake trout on Stannard Rock.

Extreme long range shooter Paul Phillips kicks off hour two.  Paul is with the US Rifle Team and recently has been working to extend his shooting ability.  Paul and his fellow shooters are shooting accurately at nearly two miles and are looking to extend their range even farther.

Then, Dan Eichinger of mucc  joins me to talk about challenges facing his organization and the hunters and anglers in Michigan today.

Outdoor writer and fishing guide Dave Rose of WildFishing.com is featured in the final hour.  Dave talks about fishing opportunities in Northern Michigan.

We wrap it up with chef Dixie Dave Minar.  This week Dave has a very nice walleye recipe.

Radio Rundown for this Weekend

First, Tom Simmon of Jays Sporting Goods has great advice on buying a gun safe.  By the way, Tom safes those safes are a great place to store all you family valuables, not just firearms.

Then Chelsea Maupin of Gud Marketing talks about the research they did on the perception of hunters and anglers in Michigan.  The results are surprising.

Hour two features Michigan’s “Whitetail Whisperer”, John Eberhart (DeerJohn.net).  Eberhart explains why most hunters aren’t as successful as they could be.  He also announces a new program to bring his expertise to your hunting property.

Katie Keen of the Michigan dnr is up next.  She reminds us that May is the month to apply for bear and elk permits.

Fishing is the topic in hour three as I talk with Lance Valentine of Walleye 101.  Lance has great advice on trolling for open water walleye and getting the most from your fishing electronics.

Radio Rundown for Mother’s Day Weekend

First RJ Meyer of the Trophy Room Taxidermy Studio in Allendale joins me to talk about preserving your hunting and fishing memories.

Then, Tom Campbell from the Woods-n-Waternews magazine has a look at their latest edition.

Hour two kicks off with Michigan dnr wildlife biologist Chad Stewart.  Chad talks about whitetail fawns and why people should never pick them up.  He also describes the latest on CWD in Michigan and proposed changes to the state’s deer hunting regulations.

Then, Shaun McKeon of the Michigan United Conservation Clubs (mucc.org) describes their new “On the Ground Jr.” program.

Bass fishing is the topic in hour 3 as I talk with fishing guide Gerry Gostenik of Great Lakes Bass Fishing.  Gerry says Michigan is one of the top states in the country for trophy smallmouth with Lake St. Clair leading the way.

Show Rundown for the First Weekend in May

We kick off the month talking about salmon fishing on Lake Michigan with Paul Schlafley of Riverside Charters in Manistee.  Paul says they’re seeing some nice kings already.

Then Emily Mallory of the Forward Corporation explains how to win a fishing trip with Paul by stopping into one of their gas stations or convenience stores.

Hour two features the “Sturgeon General”, Brenda Archambo.  Brenda describes their sturgeon guarding program on the Black River in Northern Michigan (SturgeonForTomorrow.org).

Dan Laux of the Michigan dnr is up next.  He talks about preventing wildfires and the benefits of prescription burns for habitat and wildlife.

Fishing is the topic of discussion in hour number three as I talk with outdoor writer and veteran angler Dave Mull (MidwestOutdoors.com).  Dave talks about getting into the rapidly growing sport of kayak fishing.

Rundown for the Last Weekend in April

My first guest this week is a guy I called “the most interesting man in Michigan”.  His name is Bill Hoffman (WCHoffman.com) and he’s a writer, podcaster and avid turkey hunter (among other things).  Bill talks about the world of outdoor podcaster and has some advice for Michigan turkey hunters who need more action than our state can provide.

Then, Michigan dnr Law Division Corporal Dave Painter joins me to talk about the practice of  turkey “reaping”, also known as “fanning”.  There’s been a lot of confusion in Michigan about whether it’s legal.  Officer Painter has the official word from Lansing.

Hour two kicks off with Steve Winters of the Bowfishing Association of Michigan (BowFishBam.com).  Steve talks about the popularity of bow fishing and has details on some upcoming tournaments.

Amy Trotter from the Michigan United Conservation Clubs (mucc.org) is up next.  Amy talks about proposed legislation that would make it tougher to bring in deer carcasses harvested in other states to help prevent the spread of CWD.

The final hour features Tim Roller of Tim Rollers Outdoor Journey.  In honor of the opening weekend of trout season we’re talking fly fishing in Michigan.  We also talk turkey hunting and walleye fishing as well.

Radio Show Rundown for this Weekend (4/22)

Scott Szafranski of the Linwood Beach Marina on Saginaw Bay is my first guest this week.  Scott says they’re ready for boaters and campers.  He also discusses the perch and walleye fishery on the Bay.

Then, Kenny Slavens of Jays Sporting Goods in Gaylord joins me to talk about what to look for in a ground blind for turkey season.

The hour wraps up with Wendy Scott from the Great Lakes Bay Convention and Visitors Bureau (GoGreat.com).  Wendy talks about the hunting and fishing opportunities in that part of the state.

Mark Romanack of Fishing 411 TV kicks off the second hour of this week’s show.  Mark tells about his recent trips to Lake Erie and the Detroit River for walleye.  He also has advice on how to be more productive while trolling big water.

We’re talking turkey in the next segment with Al Stewart of the Michigan dnr.  Al says the season is off to a good start and reminds us licenses for some areas are still available over the counter.

Jeff Poet kicks off the final hour this week.  First, Jeff wears his Michigan Wildlife Council hat to talk about their “Here for Generations” campaign (HereforMiOutdoors.org).  Then, he switches gears and tells of his family’s store, Jays Sporting Goods.  He describes how they got started and what sets them apart from the big, national outdoor retailers.

Radio Rundown for Easter Weekend

Ted Harpham of Michigan based Darton Archery is my first guest this week.  Ted talks about bowhunting for turkeys, the growth of bow fishing and Darton’s compounds and crossbows.

Then Tim Dusterwinkle, President of the Michigan Bear Hunters Association (mibearhunters.org), joins me to talk about a video they helped produce to promote bear hunting with dogs.

Hour two kicks off with “Michigan’s Morel Master”, Clayton Edney.  Clayton runs the Michigan Morels Facebook page and has great advice on how to find the tasty springtime treats.

Drew YoungeDyke of mucc wraps up the hour.  Drew announces his plans to leave the Michigan United Conservation Clubs and go to work for the National Wildlife Federation.  He says he’ll be working on many of the same issues….inluding asian carp.

Fishing Hall of Fame Member Mark Martin is featured in hour three.  He talks about a recent fishing trip on the Detroit River and his plans to fish the Keweenaw area for avariety of fish including walleye and trout.

Rundown for April 8/9

We kick off this weekend’s Outdoor Magazine Radio show talking turkey with Greg Abbas of A-way Outdoors.  Greg is a veteran turkey guide and turkey calling champion…and a wealth of knowledge and information.

Tom Campbell of Woods-n-Waternews is up next.  We talk about the history of their magazine and look forward to turkey season.

Hour two features Dan Jordan of Team Anglerfish.  We talk about early season fishing for coho in southern Lake Michigan and trolling shallow water for springtime browns.  Dan also describes his experience running an Angler Qwest on Lake Michigan.

Radio Rundown for the First Show in April

We kick off the new month with a fast paced show covering many topics this week.

First, Tod Williams of the Bay Port Fish Company joins me to talk about the proposed changes to Michigan’s commercial fishing laws.  Those changes would allow commercial fishermen to keep an incidental catch of walleye and lake trout.

Then, charter captain Jeff Godi of The Michigan Experience announces  a Saginaw Bay walleye fishing trip he’s giving away this summer.

Emily Mallory of the Forward Corporation wraps up the hour and explains how to win that fishing trip by stopping by your local Forward convenience store.

Hour two kicks off with Kevin Charron of Jays Sporting Goods.  Kevin talks about the importance of patterning your shotgun for turkey season and has some great advice on choosing the right loads and choke tubes.
