Radio Rundown for August 12-13

First, Brad Dupuie of Michigan made Angler Qwest boats joins me to talk about their lineup for 2018.  They made some big improvements in existing models and added a couple of new versions for southern anglers.

Then, whitetail expert John Eberhart (deer-john.net) talks about scouting hunting properties and his new consulting business to help Michigan hunters.

Next, Katie Keen from the Michigan dnr reminds us small game season opens September 15th and has details of their GEMS program for grouse hunters.

Hour three features outdoor writer and wildlife expert Richard P Smith.  Richard talks about bear and deer hunting, as well as his new book on tracking wounded whitetails.

Guest Rundown for the First Weekend in August

We kick off the new month with some great guests and information this week on the Outdoor Magazine radio show.

First, Dale Borske of the Michigan Chapter of Ducks Unlimited (ducks.org/michigan) talks about the 80th anniversary of that group and what they’re doing for wetlands habitat.

Then Glen Venner of the Lure Lipstick company describes how his product uses pheromones to attract fish.

Hour two kicks off with Capt. Paul Schlafley of Riverside Charters in Manistee.  Paul says the fishing for big king salmon has been surprisingly good this season.

Next, Josh Pawlak from Vanguard Outdoors talks about a contest that company is having to give two kids a whitetail hunt in Michigan’s UP this fall.

Lt. Steve Burton from the Michigan dnr wraps up the hour.  Steve has details on the requirements to be a Conservation Officer.

Fishing is the topic in hour number three as I talk with Mark Romanack from Fishing 411 TV.  Mark describes his recent adventures to Stannard Rock in Lake Superior and a steelhead fishing trip to Lake Erie.

Rundown for the Last Weekend in July

We wrap up the month with some great guests and information this week on Outdoor Magazine.

First, master taxidermist RJ Meyer of the Trophy Room Taxidermy studio in Allendale joins me.  RJ has great advice on preserving the memories of your Great Lakes fishing trips.

Then Tom Campbell of Woods-n-Waternews says they’re rapidly filling up on vendor space for the upcoming Outdoor Weekend in September.

Hour two kicks off with Eric Lafollette of Jays Sporting Goods.  Eric is the manager of the archery department in Jay’s Clare store and he says it’s time to start getting ready for the season.

Next, Lt. Steve Burton from the Michigan dnr talks about the current class of recruits training to be conservation officers.

Carol Rose of the Michigan Wildlife Council wraps up the hour.  She has an update on the “Here For Generations” campaign (hereformioutdoors.org).

Veteran Great Lakes charter captain Ed Rutherford of Trout Scout Charters in Alpena is featured in the final hour of this week’s show.  Ed has been a fishing guide and charter captain for almost fifty years and has plenty of stories to tell about his time on the water.

We wrap it up with chef Dixie Dave Minar.  This time it’s an interesting catfish recipe.

Radio Rundown for July 22nd.

First, Eric Sherwood of Michigan based Whitetail Select Seed talks about planting late summer food plots.  He says August is a great time for that and describes the process and how to get the best results.

Then, Nick Grillo of Michigan Brand Meats announces the opening of their online store and talks about a new recipe in the works for their jerky.

Hour two kicks off with Brad Smyth of Detroit Outdoor Adventures fishing charters (iFishDetroit.com).  Brad talks about the tremendous fishery on Lake St. Clair.

Next Nick Green, mucc‘s new Public Information Officer joins me.  Nick describes his background of hunting and fishing in Northern Michigan, as well as his plans to update the Michigan Out-of-Doors Magazine.

The hour wraps up with Bryan Darland from Jays Sporting Goods.  Bryan was at the big ICAST show in Florida and he talks about the new fishing gear unveiled there.

Hour three features Jerry Wydner of the Hunter Safety System company.  HSS was the first company to come out with an easy to use, full body safety harness.  Over the years their products have continued to improve and evolve.  This year, they now offer scent control in some of their harnesses.

Next, Michigan dnr Veterinarian Kelly Straka says TB is still a problem in the Michigan deer herd.

Matt Smith wraps up the hour.  ”Smitty” describes the process for buying hunting and outdoor recreation property.

mucc Executive Director Dan Eichinger wraps up the hour.  Dan has details of their recent convention, including talk of Michigan dove and sandhill crane hunts.  He also expresses concern over the recent discovery of asian carp very near Lake Michigan.

In the final hour of this week’s show, I talk with retired Coast Guardsman Joe Marion.  Joe spent his entire lifetime on the water and now works as a charter captain out of Lundington on Rod Master Fishing charters.

Rundown for July 4th Weekend

We kick off this long  holiday weekend talking with Glenn Duncan of Duncans Outdoor Shop in Bay City.  Glenn says this is a good time to take a look at your hunting guns, get any needed work done and get them sighted in early.

Then, app designer Rob Milano talks about the updated Outdoor Magazine app.  That app is now available free in the iTunes Store and will be updated on Google Play very soon.

Hour two kicks off with Jim Felgenauer of the St. Clair Chapter of Sturgeon for Tomorrow (stclairsturgeon.org).  Jim talks about the fantastic walleye fishing in the St. Clair river right now and also the upcoming sturgeon season there.

Then, Ron St. Louis of Northern Wilderness Bear Outfitters joins me to talk about bear hunting in White River Ontario.

The hour wraps up with Tom Campbell of Woods-n-Waternews  and a big award he received from the Michigan Outdoor Writer’s Association.

Hour two starts out with Gary Morgan of East Lake Outfitters (WildGameDynasty.com).  Gary describes his Michigan outfitting business for turkeys, bear and deer.  He also talks about his first upcoming season in Missouri for whitetails.

Next, Jim Hammill of the Michigan Wildlife Council (HereforMiOutdoors.com) talks about the progress of the “Here, for Generations” campaign.

Jared Groth of Vanguard Outdoors is up next with details of their new RaiseYourGlassPodcast, including a video version of that program.

Michigan’s “Mr. Walleye”,  Mark Martin is featured in hour three.  Mark talks about the finer points of trolling for walleye, including the use of a stern planer to catch bonus fish.

Rundown for Father’s Day Weekend.

First, Michigan dnr biologist Chad Stewart talks about the Michigan moose herd.  Moose were re-introduced to the state more than thirty years ago, but the population hasn’t grown as originally expected.

Then, Tom Campbell of Woods-n-Waternews talks about their July edition and the upcoming Outdoor Weekend in September.

Hour two kicks off with Darton Archery  staff shooter Al Burk.  Al describes how target shooter can make you a better bowhunter…especially 3D shoots.

Kevin Frawley of the DNR is up next.   He has details on the recent survey of Michigan deer hunters.  Highlights of that report include the number of hunters continues to decline, but their success rate is up slightly.  Kevin also says support for baiting and antler point restrictions is on the rise.

Hour three features Eric Lafollette of Jays Sporting Goods.  Eric has great advice on the new wireless trail cam systems and how to use them.

We wrap it up with Chef Dixie Dave Minar.   This week, Dave has a nice walleye recipe.

Show Rundown for June 10/11

Charter Captain John Roby of Chain Tail Charters (charterfishingmackinaw.com) is my first guest this week.  John talks about fishing lake trout and salmon in the straits.  He says the fishing off Mackinac Island and under the Big Mac bridge can be very good.

We continue the fishing theme in hour two with Brad Dupuie of Angler Qwest Boats.  Brad talks about the growth and evolution of that Michigan made fishing tritoon.  He also has some tips  on trolling spoons for open water walleye.

Shane Rubyonis of DreamWeaver Lures is up next.  Shane talks about the history of his company and how they continue to come up with spoons and colors that consistently catch fish.

In hour three veteran outdoor writer and outdoorsman Tom Lounsbury is featured.  Tom describes his recent turkey hunting trip where he called in a nice bird for a first time lady turkey hunter.
