Radio Rundown for this Weekend (12/16)

Now that ice fishing season is here, we kick off this week’s show with advice on staying safe from retired Coast Guardsman Joe Marion.  Joe is also an avid ice angler and has some great suggestions for preventing an accident on the ice.

Then Karl Ieuter of the Ieuter  Insurance Group dispels the rumor that your vehicle isn’t covered while on the ice.

We continue the ice fishing theme in hour two as I talk with Mark Romanack of Fishing 411 TV.  Mark has some great advice for targeting panfish and other species on first ice.

Next, Brian Mastenbrook of the Michigan dnr has an update on the December elk hunt.   He says the department uses the hunt as a management tool to control the elk population, but for a lucky group of hunters, it can be the hunt of a lifetime.

The hour wraps up with Ed Roy of the Michigan Wildlife Council (HereForMiOutdoors.org).  Ed has an update on the “Here for Generations” campaign to promote hunting and fishing in Michigan.

Coyote hunting is the topic in the final hour of this weeks show as I talk with Blaine Bailer of Jays Sporting Goods.  Blaine is a veteran predator hunter and has great advice on getting started.

We wrap it all up with Chef Dixie Dave Minar.  This week the chef has a very nice rabbit recipe.

I hope you like the show.

Outdoor Magazine Rundown for March 1st.

We kick off the month of March with a fast paced Outdoor Magazine radio show.

First, I talk with Blaine Bailer of  Jays Sporting Goods.  Blaine is a veteran coyote hunter and has great advice on late season predator hunting.

Then Tom Campbell of Woods-n-Waternews  joins me.  Tom says they’re scrambling  this year to add some late season ice fishing stories to their April Edition (available in mid March).  Tom says usually they’ve moved on to open water fishing topics by that time of year.

Hour number two features Dale McNamee of the Upper Peninsula Sportsmens Alliance.  Dale says his group is the voice of UP hunters and anglers and we discuss some of the items the group is concerned about.

Then, Katie Keen of the Michigan dnr joins me to talk about the new hunting and fishing license package.  Those new licenses will be required by April 1st.

In the third hour we head outside the great state of Michigan as I talk with charter captain Mike Orr of Five Orrs Charters.  Mike fishes southern Lake Michigan for early season trout and salmon.  Usually his trolling boat is in the water by now but Mike says it’ll be several weeks this year before the ice moves out.

Then we head to northern Quebec as I talk with Pierre Smarlack of Northern Outfitters.  Pierre runs a first rate hunting and fishing operation near the town of Val-d’or and he has info on his hunting and fishing packages.

We wrap up this week’s show, once again, with chef Dixie Dave Minar.  This week Dave has a tasty walleye recipe.

It’s another fast paces show filled with great guests and information.  I hope you like it.

Outdoor Magazine Radio (weekend of 1/2/10)

We kick off the new year with another good show on Outdoor Magazine Radio this weekend.

First, I talk about my recent hunting adventures for whitetails in Michigan using a Darton Lightning Crossbow. Hunting with a crossbow is different than using a compound and I’ll tell you why.

Then, Adam Starr of Showspan joins me to talk about the upcoming show season. Showspan is one of the midwest’s biggest producers of hunting and fishing shows. That season kicks off in Novi at the Ultimate Fishing Show in just a few days.

Next, Tom Campbell of Woods-n-Waternews wraps up the hour talking about hunting and fishing in Michigan this time of year.

In our second hour, we talk about a sport that’s growing fast….predator hunting. Blaine Bailor of Jay’s Sporting Goods joins me with some advice on how to get started.

Then Mark Romanack of Fishing 411 and Precision Angling picks up the Outdoor Magazine phone line to talk about the new season of his show on Sportsman Channel.

Our third hour continues with a fishing theme as I talk with Dave Rose of WildFishing.com. Dave is an outdoor writer and fishing guide who specializes in the northwest part of Michigan. He has some great advice on panfishing through the ice.

We wrap up the show with Chef Dixie Dave Minar. We didn’t do a recipe this week, instead Dave brings us up to speed on the launch of his new line of wild game soups.

A busy show to kick off 2010. I hope you enjoy it.
