Radio Rundown for 10/14

First, Gary Morgan of East Lake Outfitters (WildGameDynasty.com) joins me to talk about  his bear season in the eastern UP.  We also talks about deer hunting in the Yoop and look ahead to next spring’s turkey season.

Then Tom Campbell from Woods-n-Waternews  joins me to talk about their November edition.

In hour two, audiologist and avid hunter Mike Stewart is my first guest.  Mike describes the damage gunshots can do to our hearing and has some great advice on how to prevent it.

Then, Captain Jeff Godi of The Michigan Experience talks about waterfowl hunting on Saginaw Bay and how the high water could affect hunters this season.

Outdoor writer and wildlife expert Richard P Smith is featured in the final hour of this week’s show.  Richard tells the story of his successful Michigan bear hunt and talks about bear and deer hunting in Michigan.

Radio Rundown for this Weekend

We kick off the month of December this week on Outdoor Magazine Radio.

First, I talk with Drew YoungeDyke of mucc about the recent decision by the Michigan Court of Appeals that could jeopardize scientific management of our fish and game species.  Drew says the issue is now in the hands of our state Attorney General.

Then, Scott Szafranski of the Linwood Beach Marina joins me with a Saginaw Bay perch and walleye report.

The hour wraps up with Tom Campbell of Woods-n-Waternews.  Tom talks about his deer season and the latest edition of their magazine.

Steelhead fishing is the opening topic in hour number two as I talk with Lance Keene of Steelhead Hunter Charters.  Lance says river conditions are perfect now  and the action is hot.

Then, Michigan dnr wildlife biologist Ashley Autenreith joins me to talk about this year’s firearm deer season.

Hour number three features veteran coyote hunter Blaine Bailer of Jays Sporting Goods.  Blaine has great advice on getting started in that sport.

We wrap it up with Chef Dixie Dave Minar.  This time we’re not talking about a wild game recipe, but rather, our upcoming live Facebook event at Dave’s restaurant, Oscar and Joey’s Roadhouse.

Radio Rundown for October 17/18

This week’s show kicks off with Todd Grischke of the Michigan dnr.  Todd has details on the new Saginaw Bay perch and walleye regulations that are now in effect.

Then Bryan Lowe of the Michigan Buck Pole (MiBuckpole.com) joins me with a great Michigan deer hunting story.

Hour two kicks off with Jon French.  Jon is a veteran who was wounded in combat and now has come up with a way for veterans and others with vision loss to continue to shoot.  His system is called the French Visually Impaired Sighting System (VISS).  You can learn more on Jon’s Facebook page (facebook.com/VISS).

Drew YoungeDyke from mucc is up next.  Drew has another example of their “On the Ground” program in action and talks about the anti hunting movement.

The final hour features “Michigan’s Mr. Walleye”, Mark Martin (MarkMartins.net).  Mark has great advice on targeting fall walleye.  The fishing Hall of Famer also describes what it’s like to hunt deer in west Michigan sand dunes.

Wild game chef Dixie Dave Minar wraps it all up.  This time the chef has a very nice duck recipe.

Outdoor Magazine Rundown for Easter Weekend

It’s a little slower paced show this week but there’s  still lots of great outdoor news and information.

Hour number one features Derrick Poet.  Derrick talks about the importance of patterning your shotgun for turkey season and he has some great tips on how to do it.

We also discuss the importance of your bowstring for greater accuracy and longevity.  Derrick makes custom string for traditional archers, compound shooters and even crossbows.  Here’s the Facebook page for his company. https://www.facebook.com/six11archery.

Walleye fishing is the topic of the second hour this week as Capt. Jeff Godi of The Michigan Experience is my guest.  Jeff has tips on trolling for early season walleye.  We also talk about when to make the transition to trolling spoons and discuss the finer points of that presentation.

We switch gears for hour number three and talk turkeys with hunting guide Chet Loar.  Chet is one of the best turkey hunters I know and he has great advice on pre season scouting and what to do once you find the birds.

This week’s show wraps up with wild game chef Dixie Dave Minar.  This time Dave has a very nice whitefish recipe.

Radio Rundown for February 21-22

My first guest this week is Paul Jankens of Michigan made Diamond Buck Blinds.  Their blinds are designed to last for many years without cracking or leaking.  I like their product so much I bought one for the upcoming hunting seasons.

Tom Campbell of Woods-n-Waternews wraps up the hour.  Tom says their March edition is already on newsstands and has highlights of this latest edition.

Hour two kicks off with professional walleye angler Mark Martin.  Mark has details on a new method of jigging for walleye his group recently refined on Saginaw Bay.

Drew YoungeDyke of mucc is up next.  Drew talks about the latest effort to regain control of Michigan’s wolf management plan.  The issue is now in the hands of congress.

Our final hour features veteran outdoorsman and outdoor writer Tom Lounsbury.  Tom talks about wintertime crow and rabbit hunting….and lots more.

Radio Rundown for 1/24

We kick off this week’s show talking with Dale Hendershot of the Michigan Trappers and Predator Caller’s Association (mtpca.com).  I think trappers are the most knowledgeable group of outdoorsmen today, but their way of life has been under some criticism from the antis.  Dale talks about the logistics of trapping, preparation of hides and the price of fur this winter.

Hour number two kicks off with Doug Deming of the Fish Point Lodge on Saginaw Bay.  Doug talks about ice fishing for walleye on the east side of the Bay.

Then Jeff Godi of The Michigan Experience  charters has advice on fishing the west side of the Bay.  Jeff is based out of the Linwood Beach Marina.

Mike Horswill of Jays  Sporting Goods wraps up the hour talking about the hottest ice fishing gear this season.

The ice fishing theme continues into hour number three as I talk with veteran outdoor writer and avid ice angler Steve Griffin.  Steve has great advice for targeting crappies and bluegills on inland lakes.

We wrap it all up with Chef Dixie Dave Minar.  This week Dave has a very nice rabbit recipe.
