This Weekend’s Radio Show Rundown

We kick off this week’s show talking with Glenn Duncan of Duncans Outdoor Shop in Bay City.  Glenn talks about gun maintenance and recent trends in firearm sales.

Ice fishing is the topic in hour three as Joe Cook from Jays Sporting Goods joins me.  Joe has great advice on targeting pike with tip ups.

Show Rundown for Weekend of January 7

We kick off this weekend’s show talking with Al Stewart of the Michigan dnr.  Al talks about springtime turkey hunting in and reminds us now is the time to apply for a permit.

Then Ben Nielsen of Showspan joins me to talk about the Ultimate Fishing Show coming up next weekend in Novi.

Shed hunting is the opening conversation in hour two of this week’s show as I talk with Mark Miller of the North American Shed Hunter’s Club (ShedAntlers.org).  Mark says the bucks are dropping early this year and he has good advice on where to find them.

Drew YoungeDyke of mucc is up next.  Drew describes how the latest battle with anti hunting group HSUS and describes how the legislature got involved.

Hour three features veteran outdoorsman Jim Felgenauer.    Jim and I had planned to talk about perch spearing on Lake St. Clair, but there’s no good ice yet.  Instead, we shoot the breeze about a variety of outdoor related topics.

We wrap it up with Chef Dixie Dave Minar.  This time Dave has a very nice elk recipe.

Radio Rundown for the End of February

We wrap up the month with a wide range of topics this week on the Outdoor Magazine radio show.

First, Steve Sharp of the National Wild Turkey Federation (nwtf.org) talks about the R3 Program.  That’s an initiative to get more hunters through a project to recruit, retain and reactivate.

Hour two kicks off with Eric Lafollette of Jays Sporting Goods.  Eric talks about training his dogs to look for shed whitetail antlers and how he uses wireless trail cameras to scout remote hunting areas.

Brian Mastenbrook of the Michigan dnr is up next with details on a new research project involving Michigan elk.

Michigan’s “Mr. Walleye” Mark Martin kicks off the final hour of this week’s show.  Mark reminisces about the early days of fishing on Muskegon Lake and has great advice for anglers heading out this weekend.

We wrap it all up with Chef Dixie Dave Minar.  This week the Chef has a walleye recipe to remind us of warm weather.

Show Rundown for February 7/8

It’s a little slower pace this week on the Outdoor Magazine Radio Show.

In the first hour I talk with Bruce DeShano of Michigan’s Offshore Tackle.  Bruce was recently honored with a lifetime membership into the NPAA (National Professional Anglers Association) for his work in promoting fishing and the development of fishing gear and techniques.

The “Sturgeon General”, Brenda Archambo,  (Sturgeon for Tomorrow) wraps up the hour talking about the sturgeon spearing season and the Black Lake Sturgeon Shivaree this weekend.

Hour two features veteran hunter Nick Ostroski.  Nick has more experience hunting wild boars in Michigan than anyone I know.  He has some great advice on how to find, and hunt, that invasive species.  Nick also tells the story of his successful wolf hunt a couple of years ago.

Shed hunting is the topic in hour three as I talk with Mark Miller of the North American Shed Hunters Club (ShedAntlers.org).  Mark says the search for dropped whitetail antlers is a great way to enjoy the outdoors this time of year and stay in touch with the local deer herd.

Radio Rundown for 1/18

We kick off this week’s show with walleye fishing master Mark Martin.  Mark tells of a recent fishing adventure on Lake Gogebic where the wind chill was almost sixty below zero.  He also talks about his upcoming Fishing Vacation School on Saginaw Bay out of the Linwood Beach Marina.

Tom Campbell of Woods-n-Waternews wraps up the hour with a preview of their February edition.

Hour two features Mark Miller of the North American Shed Hunters Club (ShedAntlers.org).  Mark discusses the appeal of searching for shed whitetail antlers and has some tips on where to find them.

He’s followed by Amy Trotter of MUCC.  Amy talks about the status of the Citizens for Professional Wildlife Petition (CitizensWildlife.com) to fight the anti hunting movement  in Michigan.

Whitetail and black bear expert Richard P Smith is up in the third hour.  Richard talks about how the rough winter is affecting the UP deer population.  We also discuss bear numbers across the state.

We wrap it all up with chef Dixie Dave Minar.  Dave is recovering from a serious heart attack and bypass surgery.  He describes what led up to the situation.

Rundown for 2/9

Another good show this week on Outdoor Magazine Radio.

First, Captain Jeff Godie joins me to talk about ice fishing on Saginaw Bay. Jeff is a charter captain who bases his operation of the Linwood Beach Marina on the bay’s west side.

Then Tom Campbell of Woods N Waternews talks about the next edition of their magazine and what readers can expect.

Hour two features Mark Miller of the North American Shed Hunters Club. “Shedding” has developed into a very popular wintertime activity for many deer hunters.

Kent Wood of the Michigan United Conservation Clubs wraps up the hour with more conversation on the potential wolf hunt and how anti hunters are fighting that option.

One of my favorite guests (now upgraded to the title of “contributor”), Richard P. Smith starts out the third hour. This time Richard is talking about antler point restrictions in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, and how he believes the DNR is screwing up.

We wrap it all up with wild game chef Dixie Dave Minar. This week Dave and I shoot the breeze and run out of time before Dave can do a recipe.
