The topic of Michigan’s elk herd wraps up the hour as I talk with Michigan dnr Biologist Brian Mastenbrook. Brian talks about the upcoming aerial survey of the herd and plans for a new research study of the animals.
Fishing is the topic in the final hour of this week’s show as I talk with Michigan’s “Mr. Walleye”,Mark Martin . Mark has some great fishing tips, but he also talks about the business of fishing and what it takes to be successful.

My unofficial “Michigan Outdoor Legends” series continues in our number three as I talk with whitetail researcher John Ozoga. For thirty years John studied deer at the Cusino Research Station in the UP near Shingleton. His work still stands today as some of the most valuable insight into whitetail behavior ever collected.

First, Dan Eichinger of the Michigan DNR joins me to talk about the new Youth Mentored Hunting License package. In a nutshell the guidelines say a mentor can take as many kids hunting as they feel comfortable with, but only two weapons can be used by the group. Also, all mentored hunters need to be within reach of the senior hunter at all times. Mentored Youth Hunting Licenses will be available March 1st.
Hour number two features Pat McKenna of Michigan based Ameristep. Pat talks about new products for 2012 and announces a contest to give away a Carnivore blind every month this year. The grand prize will be a hog hunting trip in Florida with Ralph and Vicki Cianciarulo of Archer’s Choice Media. Those drawings will be held on my Outdoor Magazine radio show and streamed live on the Mike Avery Outdoors USTREAM channel.
Tony Hansen of MUCC wraps up the hour. This week Tony follows up on that mentored youth hunting program that MUCC spearheaded.

Trapping has been used for centuries to control the overpopulation of animals, and it’s still a viable tool today. The sport has received some bad publicity lately from the animal rights crazies and John talks about why those people are wrong.
