Radio Rundown for 1/6

Next Ben Nielsen of Showspan previews their upcoming shows for this winter.

Hour two kicks off with veteran Lake St. Clair angler Jim Felgenauer.  Jim talks about perch fishing on the lake and also the time honored tradition of spearing perch on that body of water.

Michigan’s Meteorologist Mark Torregrossa of MLive joins me next.  Mark says this bitter cold weather pattern is likely to continue through the winter.

Angler Qwest‘s Brad Dupuie is up next.  Brad talks about his company’s presence at boat shows this season and also expansion of the Angler Qwest plant.

In hour three one of my favorite guests joins me.  Veteran outdoorsman and outdoor writer Tom Lounsbury talks about his fall hunting season and looks ahead to wintertime rabbit hunting.

We wrap it up with Chef Dixie Dave Minar.  This time Dave has a very unusual bobcat recipe.

Show Rundown for Weekend of January 7

We kick off this weekend’s show talking with Al Stewart of the Michigan dnr.  Al talks about springtime turkey hunting in and reminds us now is the time to apply for a permit.

Then Ben Nielsen of Showspan joins me to talk about the Ultimate Fishing Show coming up next weekend in Novi.

Shed hunting is the opening conversation in hour two of this week’s show as I talk with Mark Miller of the North American Shed Hunter’s Club (ShedAntlers.org).  Mark says the bucks are dropping early this year and he has good advice on where to find them.

Drew YoungeDyke of mucc is up next.  Drew describes how the latest battle with anti hunting group HSUS and describes how the legislature got involved.

Hour three features veteran outdoorsman Jim Felgenauer.    Jim and I had planned to talk about perch spearing on Lake St. Clair, but there’s no good ice yet.  Instead, we shoot the breeze about a variety of outdoor related topics.

We wrap it up with Chef Dixie Dave Minar.  This time Dave has a very nice elk recipe.

Radio Rundown for New Years Weekend

We kick off the new year with some great guests and information this week on the Outdoor Magazine Radio Show.

First, Ben Nielsen of Showspan joins me to talk about the big Ultimate Fishing Show coming up next weekend in Novi.

Then Tom Campbell of Woods-n-Waternews talks about the Michigan deer season and the big buck photos submitted to their magazine this year.

Hour two features Al Herman of the Michigan Friends of NRA (friendsofnra.org).  Al says the recent political pressure against guns makes it more important than ever to get new people involved in shooting.  His group has a series of fundraising dinners across the state with that goal in mind.

The topic of Michigan’s elk herd wraps up the hour as I talk with Michigan dnr Biologist Brian Mastenbrook.  Brian talks about the upcoming aerial survey of the herd and plans for a new research study of the animals.

Fishing is the topic in the final hour of this week’s show as I talk with Michigan’s “Mr. Walleye”,Mark Martin .  Mark has some great fishing tips, but he also talks about the  business of fishing and what it takes to be successful.

We wrap it all up with Chef Dixie Dave Minar and another great wild game recipe.

Radio Rundown for New Year

We kick of 2014 with a fast paced show this week on Outdoor Magazine.

First, I talk with veteran steelhead angler Jim Diedrich about the resurgence of the AuSable River steelhead fishery.

Then, Tom Campbell of Woods-n-Waternews talks about an interesting article in their latest edition about the future of deer hunting.

Hour number two starts out with Scott Szafranski of the Linwood Beach Marina on Saginaw Bay.  Scott has great tips on ice fishing for walleye.

Showspan‘s Ben Nielsen is up next with a preview of the Ultimate Fishing Show coming up in Novi on January 9-12.

Drew YoungeDyke of MUCC and Citizens for Professional Wildlife Management (CitizensWildlife.com) also joins me to talk about the status of the petition drive to stop anti hunters in Michigan.

The man behind one of the web’s best archery sites is up next. Dave Thomas of Bowhunter Planet talks about his new website and why it’s better than ever.

The hour wraps up with Tony Hansen of MUCC. Tony has some great insight into the proposed license fee increases for Michigan outdoor enthusiasts.

My unofficial “Michigan Outdoor Legends” series continues in our number three as I talk with whitetail researcher John Ozoga. For thirty years John studied deer at the Cusino Research Station in the UP near Shingleton. His work still stands today as some of the most valuable insight into whitetail behavior ever collected.

Speaking of legends…cooking legend Dixie Dave Minar wraps the show up with a very nice walleye recipe.

Radio Rundown for 2/18

Another fast paced show this week on Outdoor Magazine.

First, Dan Eichinger of the Michigan DNR joins me to talk about the new Youth Mentored Hunting License package. In a nutshell the guidelines say a mentor can take as many kids hunting as they feel comfortable with, but only two weapons can be used by the group. Also, all mentored hunters need to be within reach of the senior hunter at all times. Mentored Youth Hunting Licenses will be available March 1st.

Then, Adam Starr of Showspan with a look ahead at next week’s Outdoorama show in Novi. Sounds like a great show and I plan to be there Saturday the 25th.

Hour number two features Pat McKenna of Michigan based Ameristep. Pat talks about new products for 2012 and announces a contest to give away a Carnivore blind every month this year. The grand prize will be a hog hunting trip in Florida with Ralph and Vicki Cianciarulo of Archer’s Choice Media. Those drawings will be held on my Outdoor Magazine radio show and streamed live on the Mike Avery Outdoors USTREAM channel.

Tony Hansen of MUCC wraps up the hour. This week Tony follows up on that mentored youth hunting program that MUCC spearheaded.

The final hour of this week’s show includes a good friend of mine, Tim Roller of Ultimate Outfitters Guide Service. Tim talks about a frustrating experience he had with a trophy buck a couple years ago and looks ahead to the spring steelhead fishing season.

Next, Ted Harpham of Darton Archery joins me to talk about Darton’s appearance at the Deer and Turkey Expo in Lansing. He also reminds me of the contest they’re having to win a new Darton bow or crossbow.

We wrap it all up with wild game chef Dixie Dave Minar. This time Dave talks about a fundraising dinner he’s involved in to help local families in need.

Lots of great guests this week on the Outdoor Magazine radio show.

First Laura Scharich of the Michigan Crossbow Federation talks about the first annual Crossbow Jamboree coming up in May. The event will be a great venue to learn more about that popular archery weapon.

Then Tim Hart of Q1 Buckpole joins me with an update on their big buck parties across the state.

The hour wraps up with Tom Campbell of Woods-n-Waternews. Tom talks about their appearance at consumer outdoor shows across Michigan. He also has details on a subscription special for listeners of the Outdoor Magazine radio show and podcast.

In the second hour Tom Miller of the North American Shed Hunters Club joins me to talk about that very popular wintertime sport. Tom describes the appeal of shed hunting and has some great tips on where to look for dropped whitetail antlers.

Tony Hansen of MUCC is up next with response to a statement made on a Michigan television show that MUCC is “in bed” with the DNR. Tony vehemently denies that line of thinking.

The final hour features one of my most popular guests, Richard P. Smith. Richard is a noted outdoor writer and expert big game hunter. This time our discussion covers a wide range of topics from walking with whitetails to a wintertime deer feeding program.

Radio Show for January 7/8

First, Ted Harpham of Michigan’s Darton Archery Company joins me with a preview of their new bows and crossbows for 2012. That product will be officially unveiled next week at the Archery Trade Association Show in Columbus.

The second hour features John Caretti of The Michigan Trappers and Predator Callers Association. Trapping has been used for centuries to control the overpopulation of animals, and it’s still a viable tool today. The sport has received some bad publicity lately from the animal rights crazies and John talks about why those people are wrong.

Radio This Weekend…Jan 8/9

This weekend on Outdoor Magazine Radio….

Tom Huggler of Showspan joins me first to talk about the Ultimate Fishing Show next weekend in Novi. He outlines the speakers, displays and attractions the show has to offer. Tom also discusses his fifty year outdoor writing career and how that business has changed.

In the next hour professional angler Kevin VanDam joins me. KVD is the country’s number one rated angler who has earned almost five million dollars fishing for bass. VanDam has some great advice on fishing for all types of fish.

Tony Hansen of MUCC wraps up the hour. Tony previews the big national archery trade show in Indianapolis.

Jeff Poet of Jay’s Sporting Goods is my next guest. Jeff is president of Jay’s…Michigan’s biggest independent outdoor retailer. Poet talks about the history of the business and how they’ve been successful for forty years. He also describes what his people look for in choosing gear that’s carried in their stores.

The program wraps up with Chef Dixie Dave Minar. This week the chef has a tasty walleye recipe.

Outdoor Magazine Radio (weekend of 1/2/10)

We kick off the new year with another good show on Outdoor Magazine Radio this weekend.

First, I talk about my recent hunting adventures for whitetails in Michigan using a Darton Lightning Crossbow. Hunting with a crossbow is different than using a compound and I’ll tell you why.

Then, Adam Starr of Showspan joins me to talk about the upcoming show season. Showspan is one of the midwest’s biggest producers of hunting and fishing shows. That season kicks off in Novi at the Ultimate Fishing Show in just a few days.

Next, Tom Campbell of Woods-n-Waternews wraps up the hour talking about hunting and fishing in Michigan this time of year.

In our second hour, we talk about a sport that’s growing fast….predator hunting. Blaine Bailor of Jay’s Sporting Goods joins me with some advice on how to get started.

Then Mark Romanack of Fishing 411 and Precision Angling picks up the Outdoor Magazine phone line to talk about the new season of his show on Sportsman Channel.

Our third hour continues with a fishing theme as I talk with Dave Rose of WildFishing.com. Dave is an outdoor writer and fishing guide who specializes in the northwest part of Michigan. He has some great advice on panfishing through the ice.

We wrap up the show with Chef Dixie Dave Minar. We didn’t do a recipe this week, instead Dave brings us up to speed on the launch of his new line of wild game soups.
