This Weekend’s Radio Show Rundown

We kick off this week’s show talking with Glenn Duncan of Duncans Outdoor Shop in Bay City.  Glenn talks about gun maintenance and recent trends in firearm sales.

Ice fishing is the topic in hour three as Joe Cook from Jays Sporting Goods joins me.  Joe has great advice on targeting pike with tip ups.

We wrap it all up with chef Dixie Dave Minar and another great wild game recipe.

Radio Rundown for this Weekend (12/16)

Now that ice fishing season is here, we kick off this week’s show with advice on staying safe from retired Coast Guardsman Joe Marion.  Joe is also an avid ice angler and has some great suggestions for preventing an accident on the ice.

Then Karl Ieuter of the Ieuter  Insurance Group dispels the rumor that your vehicle isn’t covered while on the ice.

We continue the ice fishing theme in hour two as I talk with Mark Romanack of Fishing 411 TV.  Mark has some great advice for targeting panfish and other species on first ice.

Next, Brian Mastenbrook of the Michigan dnr has an update on the December elk hunt.   He says the department uses the hunt as a management tool to control the elk population, but for a lucky group of hunters, it can be the hunt of a lifetime.

The hour wraps up with Ed Roy of the Michigan Wildlife Council (HereForMiOutdoors.org).  Ed has an update on the “Here for Generations” campaign to promote hunting and fishing in Michigan.

Coyote hunting is the topic in the final hour of this weeks show as I talk with Blaine Bailer of Jays Sporting Goods.  Blaine is a veteran predator hunter and has great advice on getting started.

We wrap it all up with Chef Dixie Dave Minar.  This week the chef has a very nice rabbit recipe.

Radio Rundown for March 4/5

We kick off the new months with some great guests and interesting topics.

First, Eric Sherwood of Whitetail Select food plot seed joins me.  Eric is an agronomist and hunter who brings an interesting perspective to the food plot business.  He has great advice on starting a plot, where to put it, how big to make it and what seed to use.

Hour two kicks off with outdoor writer and fishing guide Dave Rose of  Wildfishing.com. Dave talks about late winter and early spring fishing opportunities in Northern Michigan.

Then, Drew YoungeDyke of mucc talks about their concern over possible changes in the Michigan commercial fishing laws that would allow those fishermen to keep walleye, salmon and trout.  CWD and asian carp are also topics of discussion.

We wrap up the hour with Kurt Ieuter of the Ieuter Insurance Group.  Kurt says it’s important to work with the right insurance company to protect our outdoor gear and equipment.

Guns and shooting are the topic in hour three of this week’s show as I talk with Glenn Duncan of Duncans Outdoor Shop in Bay City.  Glenn talks about the demand for guns today, how to maintain them and what to look for when buying a new gun.

We wrap it up with Chef Dixie Dave Minar.  This week Dave and I talk about the recent wild game dinner and auction by my church, Trinity Monitor, and what it takes to cook for hundreds of people at an event like that.

Show Rundown for the end of January

We wrap up the month talking about a wide variety of topics this week.

First, Michigan dnr fisheries biologist Jim Baker talks about the Saginaw Bay walleye fishery and the role ciscos/herring could play in the future.

Then “Sturgeon General” Brenda Archambo of Sturgeon for Tomorrow joins me with details on the upcoming Sturgeon Shivaree on Black Lake.

Hour two kicks off with outdoor writer Richard P Smith.  Richard says bear predation on UP whitetails is a bigger problem than most people realize.  He also talks about the effective of mandatory antler point restrictions.

Adam Bump from the DNR  is up next.  Adam reminds us that squirrel and rabbit seasons are still open.  He says with poor ice conditions across the southern part of the state, small game hunting is a good option.

Professional angler and fishing educator Lance Valentine of Walleye 101 is featured in hour three.  Lance talks about chasing trophy wintertime walleye on Lake Erie and looks ahead to the springtime fishery on the Detroit River.

Wild game chef Dixie Dave Minar wraps it all up with another great recipe.

Outdoor Magazine Radio Rundown for December 10/11

Hour two kicks off with Corky Legue.  Corky loves to chase rabbits with beagles and has advice on choosing the right dog.

Next, Michigan dnr biologist Chad Stewart talks about the young bull elk that wandered into the southern Michigan CWD zone and was killed over concerns about disease.

The third hour of this week’s show features outdoor writer Richard P Smith.  Richard is downstate on his annual pre-Christmas book tour.

Radio Rundown for September 10/11

Jeania Canel of Jays Sporting Goods is my first guest on this week’s Outdoor Magazine radio show.  Jeania is the manager of the gun department in their Clare store and has worked in the business for more than three decades.  This time, we’re talking shotguns for the fall hunting seasons.

Hour two kicks off with Doug Deming of the Fish Point Lodge on Saginaw Bay.  Doug talks about the walleye fishery there this past summer and looks ahead to fall waterfowl hunting.

Al Stewart of the Michigan dnr is up next.  Al is a wildlife biologist and hard core upland bird hunter.  Al has a preview of the Michigan grouse and woodcock seasons.

Veteran outdoor writer Tom Lounsbury is featured in the final hour of this week’s show.  Tom talks to us from a goose blind and says the action on that particular day was pretty slow.  We also discuss bear and deer hunting…along with several other topics.

The show wraps up with chef Dixie Dave Minar.  Dave and I talk about an upcoming Facebook live event at Oscar and Joey’s restaurant scheduled for the evening of the 21st.  The chef also has a very nice wild game recipe.

Radio Rundown for this Weekend

Eric Sherwood of Whitetail Select kicks off this weekend’s show.  Eric says this is a great time to plant food plots.  He also discusses how the lack of rain might is causing problems with some plots this summer.

Next, Tom Campbell of Woods-n-Waternews joins me.  Tom talks about the August edition of their magazine and the big Outdoor Weekend coming up in early September.

Hour two features Jerry Wydner of the Hunter Safety System.  HSS was the first company to come out with an easy to use, full body harness for tree stand hunters.   Jerry   says today’s products are a big improvement over that first design.

Drew YoungeDyke of mucc is up next.  Drew has details on their new quarterly Michigan Out of Doors magazine.

Bird dogs are the subject in the final hour of this week’s show as I talk with Al Stewart.  Al is a hard core upland bird hunter who live his english setters.  Al also happens to be the upland game bird specialist for the Michigan dnr, so we talk about the outlook for the fall hunting seasons too.
