Rundown For The Weekend of 10/21

First, Chad Stewart of the Michigan dnr has an update on CWD in Michigan, including the latest case in Montcalm County.

Then Jim Hammill from the Michigan Wildlife Council (HereforMiOutdoors.org) joins me to talk about that group and their “Here For Generations”  campaign.

Hour two features professional angler Lance Valentine of  Walleye 101.  Lance is getting ready to head down to Lake Erie to chase big walleye.   He has advice on trolling big water in the late season.

DNR biologist and avid upland bird hunter Al Stewart is up next.  Al has details of an upcoming woodcock symposium.

Pheasant hunting is the topic in the final hour of this week’s show as I talk with Tom Lounsbury.  Tom hasn’t missed an opening day of the Michigan pheasant season in six decades.  He says the birds have changed over the years and has advice on how to hunt them today.

We wrap it all up with wild game chef Dixie Dave Minar.  As always, Dave has a recipe that sounds great.

Radio Show Rundown for this Weekend (4/22)

Scott Szafranski of the Linwood Beach Marina on Saginaw Bay is my first guest this week.  Scott says they’re ready for boaters and campers.  He also discusses the perch and walleye fishery on the Bay.

Then, Kenny Slavens of Jays Sporting Goods in Gaylord joins me to talk about what to look for in a ground blind for turkey season.

The hour wraps up with Wendy Scott from the Great Lakes Bay Convention and Visitors Bureau (GoGreat.com).  Wendy talks about the hunting and fishing opportunities in that part of the state.

Mark Romanack of Fishing 411 TV kicks off the second hour of this week’s show.  Mark tells about his recent trips to Lake Erie and the Detroit River for walleye.  He also has advice on how to be more productive while trolling big water.

We’re talking turkey in the next segment with Al Stewart of the Michigan dnr.  Al says the season is off to a good start and reminds us licenses for some areas are still available over the counter.

Jeff Poet kicks off the final hour this week.  First, Jeff wears his Michigan Wildlife Council hat to talk about their “Here for Generations” campaign (HereforMiOutdoors.org).  Then, he switches gears and tells of his family’s store, Jays Sporting Goods.  He describes how they got started and what sets them apart from the big, national outdoor retailers.

Radio Rundown for September 10/11

Jeania Canel of Jays Sporting Goods is my first guest on this week’s Outdoor Magazine radio show.  Jeania is the manager of the gun department in their Clare store and has worked in the business for more than three decades.  This time, we’re talking shotguns for the fall hunting seasons.

Hour two kicks off with Doug Deming of the Fish Point Lodge on Saginaw Bay.  Doug talks about the walleye fishery there this past summer and looks ahead to fall waterfowl hunting.

Al Stewart of the Michigan dnr is up next.  Al is a wildlife biologist and hard core upland bird hunter.  Al has a preview of the Michigan grouse and woodcock seasons.

Veteran outdoor writer Tom Lounsbury is featured in the final hour of this week’s show.  Tom talks to us from a goose blind and says the action on that particular day was pretty slow.  We also discuss bear and deer hunting…along with several other topics.

The show wraps up with chef Dixie Dave Minar.  Dave and I talk about an upcoming Facebook live event at Oscar and Joey’s restaurant scheduled for the evening of the 21st.  The chef also has a very nice wild game recipe.

Rundown for April 16/17

Great guests and information this week on the Outdoor Magazine Radio Show.

First Matt Pedigo, chairman of the Michigan Wildlife Council joins me.  Matt talks about the new “Here. For Generations” campaign (hereformi.org).  That campaign to educate Michigan’s non hunters and anglers officially kicked off this week.   Matt also puts on his bear hunter hat and we discuss the growth of bear hunting in Michigan.

Hour two kicks off with expert turkey hunter and Michigan dnr biologist Al Stewart.  Al talks about turkey hunting in Michigan and has some great tips to make your hunt more successful.

Drew YoungeDyke of the Michigan United Conservation Clubs (mucc.org) is up next.  Drew outlines some of the resolutions proposed by their club members.

Springtime fishing is the topic of hour number three as professional angler and fishing educator Lance Valentine of Walleye 101 joins the show.  Lance has great advice on jigging the Detroit River for walleye and early season trolling on Saginaw Bay.

We wrap it all up with chef Dixie Dave Minar.  This week Dave has a very nice turkey recipe.

Radio Rundown for first weekend in May

Lots of great news and information on this week’s show.

First I talk my turkey season so far. When we recorded the show I had not connected on a bird yet, but the next morning I shot this nice Michigan gobbler.

Then Bruce DeShano of Offshore Tackle joins me to talk about his company and how their products have changed trolling over the years.

The hour wraps up with Tom Campbell of Woods n Waternews. Tom tells me he’s struggling this turkey season and hasn’t seen a lot of birds yet.

The second hour features Dave Engel of Best Chance Too Charters. The guys on Best Chance are some of the most respected, and successful charter anglers and tournament fishing on the Great Lakes. Dave shares some tips during our conversation.

Tony Hansen of MUCC is up next. Tony talks about a summer camp designed to get kids involved in the outdoors. He also has reaction to the uproar over the wild pig issue in Michigan.

Turkeys are the topic of the final hour as DNR biologist and avid hunter Al Stewart joins me. Al has the story of how turkeys were re-introduced to Michigan and he has some great tips for hunting the late season.

The show wraps up with wild game chef Dixie Dave Minar. This time Dave has a very nice walleye recipe.
