I interviewed DNR Wildlife Chief Russ Mason this week on the Outdoor Magazine Radio show. This is the first time I’ve had a chance to talk with him and I enjoyed the conversation.
Mason seems to be a straight shooter. He doesn’t dance around controversial issues, even when some people might not like his answers.
One of the topics we talked about was CWD. You probably know chronic wasting disease was found in one captive whitetail at a breeding facility in Kent County. As a result, baiting of deer was banned across the lower peninsula.
Since no additional cases of CWD have been found, many hunters are calling for the baiting ban to be lifted. I asked Mason if that will happen. Click here for an excerpt from that conversation
I’ve said from the beginning baiting will never return to Michigan’s lower peninsula. There’s certainly nothing I can see on the horizon that would make me want to change that position.
