Thanks Jon, this is by far the biggest deer I’ve killed to date. This seasons has definately been a blessing and a curse with countless miscues leading to this great hunt. I killed this buck on the 4th but this was the third time in as many days that I had seen him all from different stands. The first night I saw him I was nearly a 1/2 mile from the final encounter, and the night before I killed him I shot over his back from a stand a couple hundred yards away.
On the fourth, I got into a ground blind overlooking a food plot and after sitting down he came through only 15 minutes later. At 42 yards I zipped one through his rib cage about 3″ behind the shoulder and if anything a little low. He ended up running off about 50 yards and stopped. He stood there looking around for what seemed like 30 minutes in all actuallity was probablly more like 30 seconds. I could see the fletching sticking out and and the blood flowing and after a couple of nervous tail twitches he bounded off. as he didthat another buck and doe came into view and about 20 minutes later they were out of view. I got out of the blind and went to look at the sign and there were massive amounts of blood everywhere so I took up the blood trail thinking he was done for. Well about 80 yards later he jumped up 5 yards from me and took off like a mad man. I thought for sure he was dead and as I watched him run away out of sight nearly 150-200 yards I thought I was in trouble. So I called Mike on his cell phone in Kansas asking his advice if I should stay on him not wanting him to close up or back out go have dinner and come back. Well mike talked me into backing out and giving him some time.
I went back out with my boss a couple hours later and after close to a half mile and one river crossing we found him only 400 yards from the truck on one of our access lanes. At least we didnt have to drag this 2 1/2 year old 150# dressed deer, just backed the truck up to him and loaded him up.
Man are these animals tough the blood trail was one Stevie Wonder could have followed and he still went almost 1/2 mile. Cant wait to see the horns when they come back from Trophy Room Taxidermy, the guys there are doing a european mount for me.
Nice Buck James… Looks like another trip to Dave’s may be in line for us!
